President Obama gives speech without teleprompter and the world doesn’t end

I caught President Obama’s press conference in Lisbon yesterday and his introductory speech. He didn’t have his teleprompter with him and was reading off of a script on the lectern. And it turns out, he did just fine. The president is an excellent reader of speeches (no, this isn’t a slam, both George w Bush and John McCain were awful). The president prefers to use a TelePrompTer, but he’s still quite good just form notes. He rarely stumbles and is still able to give eye contact with the audience roughly 50% of the time.
However, the president does get more plodding during the question and answer portion. He seems more hesitant and has more uhs and ums come up. But this isn’t anything new; he’s been this way since he was a candidate.
Yet another news story about Obama using a TelePrompTer

Get over it people!!! Obama uses a TelePrompTer. He uses it well. Reagan always used a TelePrompter. He used it well. The very same people who are shocked! shocked! shocked! that Obama uses a Teleprompter would have a heart attack if anyone attacked their dear Reagan. Enough of this silliness!!! Here is the story in the Hindustan Times

Obama Mocked for Using Teleprompter at Elementary School

Once again President Obama is being mocked for using a teleprompter–this time at an elementary school. My advice, the President should ignore his critics and keep using the Teleprompter–it works for him and keeps him on message. Democrats used to attack President Reagan for using cue cards, even in meetings. Reagan, wisely ignored his critics too.
Obama Teleprompter blunder

No matter how good you are at using the Teleprompter, mistakes are going to happen if you don’t practice. Obama got caught yesterday thanking himself while reading a prompter—he was reading the wrong speech!

There is no foolproof –protection against this unless you rehearse each and every speech—something Obama can do for big speeches, but not necessarily the run-of-the mill stuff on a daily basis. This is, in fact, why other presidents didn’t use prompters for ordinary meet-n-greet speaking opportunities at the white House. I’m not ready to suggest that Obama give up the prompter, but a little more rehearsal may come in handy, or switching to a system where only his outline appearances on the prompter screen.

Governor Kathleen Sebelius (D-Kansas) made the Democratic response to George Bush’s State of the Union Address last night. Sebelius looked professional, smooth, competent, and knowledgeable.
