Sound bites of the day TJ Walker – Michael Steele, Steven Slater, Obama and the Mosque

Ed Rollins, the GOP operative who was Ragan’s Campaign manager, basically came out and admitted that GOP Michael Steele is the biggest disaster to happen to the Republicans since, well, Watergate. Steele isn’t able to communicate positive messages about the party—he’s too busy defending himself against the charges that he is the biggest screw-up ever.
Confirmed-Steven Salter has been offered a reality show. But Steven, don’t spend the cash just yet, there’s a minor niggling detail to be ironed out, namely, did you make the whole thing up about getting hit on the head and suffering abuse form passengers?

Sound bites from TJ Walker-Dr Laura, Steven Slater, Tim Horrigan, Rupert Murdoch
Dr. Laura has gotten some flack for using the N-word in an on-air conversation. She wasn’t suing the term disparagingly. She apologized quickly and thoroughly. I’m no Dr. Laura fan, but I don’t think this episode will hurt her.
Steven Slater, the angry flight attendant, is having his story questioned. Reporters can’t find any passengers who claim to have heard or seen the things Slater alleges. If his story doesn’t get some corroboration, he will quickly be seen as a flake, a joke and a disturbed person. He can then forget the endorsement deals and reality show.
Sound bites from TJ Walker August 12, 2010 Steven Slater, Jetblue, David Dinkins

JetBlue deserves an f- for waiting 48 hours before responding to the angry flight attendant situation. But I give them an A+ for their witty, fun, light blog posting they put out. JetBlue will escape any damage from the flight attendant story because it is a personal story about one man’s frustration with an obnoxious public—it could have been any airline.
The Steven Slater story is getting bigger and bigger. Slater appears to be growing into his role of public persona and celebrity. Look for news of him signing on with an agent and pr4ofissional management by the end of the week.
Media Training tips for Steven Slater–from TJ Walker

Don’t ever kick Good Morning America producers out of your car again—they aren’t the ones trying to put you in jail.- Line up a major morning show interview, plus Oprah and the New York Times (today!)—don’t wait for your story to get old and boring.
- Tell your story with facts and feeling. When did the abuse start? How did the woman hit you over the head? When did you have enough?
- Apologize for risking the lives of anyone who could have been in the way of the falling inflatable exit slide.
- Admit that you were wrong to have done what you did.
- Proclaim that you are no role model for anyone.
- Simply share your real emotions about being abused by rude, obnoxious passengers who harmed you.
- Stress that you are like everyone else. You try to work in an honorable and ethical fashion for 20 years and were surrounded by abuse.
- Say “yes” to every media opportunity you get.
- Don’t sleep for the next month if need be. This is your moment in the sun; go for it with all your efforts. This is your chance to fly in first class the rest of your life and to treat other flight attendants any way you please.
Steven, if you play your cards right, you can become the next “Levi Johnston,” “Joe the plumber” and “Jake the Bachelor” all rolled into one. Do I think you are going to get your own primetime series on NBC and an $8 million book deal? No. But you could parley this into TV spokesperson jobs for law firms seeking to represent aggrieved workers, stress management medications and beer companies (let’s hope that beer you grabbed on your way out of the plane was a major brand with a big ad budget). You are also a natural to be a contestant on “celebrity apprentice” or “I’m a celebrity get me out of here.” Yes, you could get a smaller book deal and you could even be a hit on the speaking circuit at, say, $15,000 a pop for the next year. But we warned; your gravy train will soon dry up. You have a limited window to rake in as much cash as possible. But if you play your cards right, you could milk $2 million out of this in the next 18 months, squirrel away one million, and if you invest it in a simple annuity, never work another day of your life.
Short takes on Rand Paul, Steven Slater, Kanye West, and Charlie Rangel

Short takes – sound bites from TJ
Kanye West has been invited back to the MTV Video Music Awards show. Prediction: he won’t be grabbing the mic from Taylor Swift or anyone else this year. In fact, there may be a few sketches where other people grab the mic out of his had repeatedly. It will help his image if he went along with the skit good-naturedly.
Rand Paul finally denied the charges that he kidnapped a woman while he was in college. He went 24 hours before making the denial—a major strategic blunder. Worse, his apology seemed weasily because he conflated the charges that he had been abducted by aliens with the charges that he had kidnapped a woman and said that “they” were untrue. This was either a sloppy apology or he really isn’t denying the kidnapping charges. Expect this issue to get further play in the campaign.
