I have to beg you to read an in-depth look at Rex Ryan’s ability as a speaker in yesterday’s New York Times. The role of speech in leadership is brilliantly explained here. Ryan got his job because of how well he communicated in his interview with the owner.
Now, players are talking about how they can’t sleep at night because they are thinking of the power of Ryan’s words. Some people dismiss great public speaking as mere show-boating or as an extra-curricular marketing activity that can be farmed out. Ryan shows how it is 100% central to all that he is as a leader.

Did Rex Ryan And His Wife Co-Star In A Foot Fetish Video? PLUS…Most. Uncomfortable. Press. Conference. Ever. (Video)

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan did himself a disservice during his press conference yesterday by sticking to the same prepared reply to every reporters question of “It’s a personal matter.” Ryan did not exactly put his foot in his mouth with any outward denials but he did seem rather uncomfortable, tease and spoke in a soft voice which a huge departure from the blustery presence he usual has at press conferences.
By sticking with “a personal matter” and not elaborating Ryan left the door wide open for what can be perceived as an admission that it was indeed him and his wife in the videos. The one bright spot in the press conference was when he did indeed open up about his wife and talk about how they have been married for 23 years and how she is a wonderful woman. A stronger tone came to his voice and it was the one time during the press conference that he did seem totally out of his element.
Did NY Jets put full court press on reporter?

The Jets look like first class louts with the way they were ogling the TV Azteca reporter. In general, a savvy sports player or executive would be smart to visualize every sports reporter as no sexier than Howard Cosell. However, me thinks TV Azteca and Ines Sainz protest too much. Young, extremely hot reporters who are hired to go on TV because they are young and are extremely hot and are shocked, shocked to see people relating to them as if they were extremely hot is a bit much to take.
Rex Ryan’s rough language and Hard Knocks- media training

The decision by the NY Jets to allow HBO camera’s follow their training camp for this seasons installment of Hard Knocks was thought to be a stroke of programming genius four months ago when the partnership was announced. Take one over-sized and outspoken coach in Rex Ryan, mix in a star quarterback in Matt Sanchez and sprinkle in a contract dispute with one of its best players and you had the recipe for great television.
Last weeks premiere provided viewers with an inside look at a cursing and foul mouth Rex Ryan hamming it up for the camera as well as taunting the rest of the league with the pronouncement that the Jets will be the team to beat. Ryan has been getting heat in the NY media since the broadcast because of the language that he used and if it is really in the best interest of the Jets to have the face of their franchise going on TV littering the airwaves with four letter words.
The Jets are owned by Woody Johnson of Johnson & Johnson fame so he is well aware of corporate image. From a media standpoint it would not be in his best interest to have the CEO of Johnson & Johnson going on TV cursing up a storm and putting down Kraft. When he puts on his owners hat he is fully aware that having a coach who is so boisterous and outgoing is a good thing. Ryan has become a brand in his own right and if he can back up his big talk with big wins he will only enhance his media image.
