Career Advice, If You Declare War On Rupert Murdoch, don’t Tell Anyone
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, media relations, Media Training, public relations, reputation management on December 22, 2010
British Business Minister Vince Cable said he was “declaring war” on Rupert Murdoch and a reporter got wind of it. And Now Mr. Cable has lost a great deal of his powers.
Lesson: everyone is in favor of strong, forceful, direct language–until they aren’t. There is a reason government officials should bureaucratic and boring sometimes. It’s because they are supposed to be impartial and fair to everyone. When you say how you really feel, you upset too many people and then you get sacked.
Harold “Hal” Turner, the blogger and Internet radio host Sentencted to 33 months in Prison
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, Media, News, reputation management on December 22, 2010
This is the jerk who thought it would be cute to advocate killing three Federal Judges because he didn’t like their opinions. “Hal” is why bloggers and internet radio talk show hosts have a bad reputation.
Freedom of speech is not and has never been unlimited. You can’t advocate violence and death to people, especially government officials. Here’s hoping “Hal” gets a tough prison with no Internet connection allowed.
Film Director Jafar Panahi Sentenced to 6 Years in Prison
Posted by TJ Walker in Uncategorized on December 22, 2010
Now THAT’S what I call censorship. It’s important to realize in a world where people cry “censorship” ever two seconds just because some didn’t like or buy their movie or book, that real censorship exists where governments stop artists and journalists from communicating their work.
Eli Manning Acts like an All MEDIA Pro at No-show Press Conference
Posted by TJ Walker in Uncategorized on December 22, 2010
NFL quarterback Eli Manning is mocked in this YouTube video for a recent press conference where virtually no one showed up. I think Manning should be praised. He showed up on time, didn’t complain, and treated the one kid there as if he were just as important as a room full of TV network sportscasters. That is a class act Eli! You are our media pro of the day.
Styleite Ranks the Top Ten Democrat Dressers

Mark Twain once said “clothes make the man.” I wouldn’t go that far, but they can have a huge impact on public opinion. Here are the choices from Styleite. Some of their choices make perfect sense. But putting Sen. Barbara Boxer on the list but not President Obama seems a little off to me. See for yourself at Styleite.
Your Cell Phone Ring Tone is Sending a Message to Those Around You
Posted by TJ Walker in Audio/Video Technology, Communications, Press Room, reputation management on December 20, 2010
It’s fine if you have a generic ringtone, but if you are an estate lawyer and your cell phone rings to the tune of Cheech and Chong getting high, are you sending the right message to clients? If your wife calls and the ring tone is set to “American Beauty” do your co-workers get confused? Today’s high tech world gives more and more ways of communicating good and bad messages to all those around you. I advise giving real though to using any ring tone that isn’t a generic setting. Tones can help or hurt your image. More at AM New York.
Craigslist shuts down its “Adult Services” Section on sites Worldwide
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, internet marketing, Media, public relations, reputation management on December 19, 2010
Craigslist has learned an old but important lesson the hard way: you will be judged by the company you keep. Craigslist has taken a lot of heat in the US for its sections that advertise for prostitution and other unsavory acts. Now, the worldwide pressure has mounted and Craigslist is throwing in the towel (or off the towel?) on this whole sleaze business.
Craigslist is a great business, but let’s not kid ourselves when it comes to their ethics. Just because something is legal (or in this case the legal liability can be plausibly denied) doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do.
Sound bite of the day: “Berlusconi pays for sex, for votes, for mafia protection, for everything he can buy. What he cannot buy, will be stolen”
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Government & Politics, media relations, Media Training, Politics, Presentation Skills Training, Professional Speakers, public relations, reputation management on December 19, 2010
That’s what someone tweeted about The Italian Prime Minister at a European Union summit this week–and it was projected up on a big screen at the conference attended by…Berlusconi. This sound bite is priceless. while it sums up what many people think about politicians in general, it does appear to be true with respect to Berlusconi. The sound bite stands out in its purity. It is pity, attacking, forceful, all-encompassing, accurate, fair, economical and says what what most people (at least in Europe) think about Berlusconi, but are afraid to say in public or on Twitter.
This story is also a good reason conference organizers need to think twice about projecting all tweets about a ocnference. More at Gawker.
Julian Assange Calls ABC Reporter a “Tabloid Schumck”
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, Media, media relations, Media Training, public relations, reputation management on December 19, 2010
If Julian Assange continues with this sort of mean-spirited name calling against the media, he could very well end up as Sarah Palin’s running mate in 2012 (and I’m sure Palin could deal with the pwesky little citizenship requirement for Assange) Watch Assange in Action below.
Ukraine legislators beat the Cr@p Out of Each Other!
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, Debate Central, Government & Politics, Politics, public relations, reputation management on December 19, 2010
While it is fun to bash legislators as wind bags spouting off hot air, it turns out that smashing your opponents with nasty rhetoric is still a lot less painful than getting hit over the head with a chair. Watch this video to make you fee better about your own local and national lawmakers.
Senate passes bill allowing Gays in the Military
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Government & Politics, media relations, Politics, reputation management on December 19, 2010
If people are looking for a reason why the Congress is held in such low regard, they should start with an issue like “Gays in the military.” To most Americas, whether they are Democrat or Republican, Liberal, Moderate or Conservative, this is such an old, tired issue. It seems as relevant as a debate on whether communism is better than capitalism.
Most Americans, whether they are in the military or not, simply have bigger things to worry about than whether someone is gay. For the Senate to debate and debate and debate like this is a really big deal sends a loud and clear message to most Americans: “Your Senate is out of touch, committed to wasting time, and is about 15 years behind the thinking of most normal Americans.”
Damage to Public Reputation—Perez Hilton headline – Lara Flynn Boyle’s Lips Show Up At A Party…
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, public relations, reputation management on December 13, 2010
This is the real problem for celebrities and newsmakers who indulge in plastic surgery. The media will mock them for looking horrible, looking vain, and looking twice as old as before. Look at the story and sad photos of Lara Flynn Boyle at Perez Hilton
Prince William and Kate Middleton release Engagement Photos
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Communications, Government & Politics, media relations, public relations on December 12, 2010
This is a smart PR on the part of the Royal Family. Photos of young, good looking people are a great way to engender positive feelings with the public. Because one day, the Prince and his Kate won’t look the same. One day, they will look like Charles and Camilla. And we already know what British commoners think of them: a mob attacked Charles and his wife in their Rolls Royce last week and nearly poked them to death. Anger is rising at the spoils handed to the monarchy.
So more Richard Nixon tapes emerge and he’s even a bigger jerk than imagined
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, media relations, public relations, reputation management on December 12, 2010
It’s one thing to be secretly taped saying obnoxious things. It’s another to install a secret taping system yourself, as Richard Nixon did, and then say every vile and obnoxious thing you can possibly think of.
What could Richard Nixon have been thinking? As twisted as he was, he was usually shrewd and crafty when it came to politics and he was obsessive about his image. It also makes you wonder, what thoughts did he keep to himself for fear they would be too offensive? Short of advocating incest AND bestiality, it’s hard to imagine how Nixon could have sounded more odious.
Miley Cyrus Caught smoking a bong on her 18th birthday
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Crisis Communications, media relations, public relations, reputation management on December 11, 2010
This headline is less…and more than it seems. No, the bong wasn’t filled with marijuana, so Miley wasn’t breaking any laws. But it wasn’t exactly filled with soap bubbles either. She was smoking a legal herb called Salvia, known for its psychedelic qualities. Sine Cyrus makes tens of millions of dollars a year brandishing a wholesome, parents-approved-for-tweens, Disney image, this sort of thing can be devastating. Michael Phelps took some big hits, so to speak, when caught with a bong not too long ago.
Prediction: the Cyrus PR team will try to neutralize this quickly by doing 2 things. 1. Have Miley apologize and say it was a dumb thing to do. And 2. Have Cyrus shoot a public service announcement urging kids to avoid all types of smoking.
Luke Scott named “Worst Person in the World” by Keith Olbermann
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Crisis Communications, media relations, reputation management on December 11, 2010
As predicted her last week, Luke Scott is on his way to being a pariah and a corporate spokesperson untouchable. The Baltimore Orioles baseball player recently said that Obama wasn’t good for American and that he wasn’t born in America. Yes, this is America and people are entitled to hold and voice their opinions. But when you are as high profile as Scott that means that other people like Olbermann are free to name you the worst person in the world. Let’s see how many Wheaties box covers Scott gets on now. Woman caught on video being complete jerk while ordering Pizza
Posted by TJ Walker in Audio/Video Technology, reputation management, Social Media, Video, Worst Speaker of the Day on December 11, 2010
This is why it’s not only nice to be polite to people, it’s smart too. The woman in this video will be known for the rest of her life to family, friends and associates as a complete idiot. It is a brave new world where everything is being captured on video, not by big brother, but by us.
Bernie Madoff’s Son kills himself by Hanging
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, reputation management on December 11, 2010
Why is reputation management so important? Because for many people, if you lose enough of your reputation, it is the same thing as a government imposed death sentence. Mark Madoff was not an active target of any criminal investigation—in fact he was instrumental in turning in his father. But the weight of being a public pariah so tortured Mark Madoff that he took his own life. Yet another reason for business people to conduct themselves in an ethical manner, if not for your own sake, for your children’s. More at the New York Times.
As predicted, media savvy Haley Governor Haley Barbour put out a statement today to try to stop the flow of damaging news articles that imply he an unreconstructed racist.
