But why Vick called the interview off, and for what reasons, aren’t the issues of the moment. This is: was it a good idea or not? There are arguments out there for both sides.

The good folks at Gawker take Koch Industries to task in that wonderful Gawker way. But in between all the Gawker snarkiness, they provide some good PR tips for Gawker, including:
#1. Hire a spokesperson.

Michael Vick To Sit Down With Oprah Winfrey
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, blogging, Body Language, celebrities, Communications, Crisis Communications, tip of the day on February 15, 2011

by Mike Bako – The media spotlight has shown brightly on Vick this year and he has not had any hiccups along the way. Vick is now in the home stretch of his rehabilitation tour and he will be crossing the finish line with a sit-down on Oprah Winfrey’s couch.
Vick has said and done the right things every step of the way this year. Aside from an interview with 60 Minutes he has said most of these things to the sports media. I think that going on Oprah is a good final step to reach some of those casual fans or people who still only associate his name with dog fighting and going to jail.

Public speaking moment of the day: LeBron James confronts his heckler in Detroit
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Best Speaker of the Day, Body Language, celebrities, CEOs/Financial, Crisis Communications, Public Speaking Skills, tip of the day, Training Community on February 14, 2011

by Mike Bako -At this point in his career Lebron James has heard it all from opposing fans. The boos, the cheers, the cursing and through it all he has continuously preformed at a high level. At times it almost seemed like he used it as fuel to reach even greater heights.
So why did he decide to verbally confront a fan in Detroit over heckling that he was receiving? It certainly was not the first time he had heard it from the Detroit crowd. What was different this time was that his small children were nearby and he did not want them hearing the curses coming out of the fans mouth.

Chris Brown Apologizes for Using Anti-Gay Slurs In Social Media
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Communications, Media, Media Training, public relations, reputation management on December 31, 2010
We are in the tail end of a zeitgeist change where using gay slurs has gone from acceptable and normal to unacceptable and taboo. Entertainers who use anti-gay slurs now face the wrath of Perez Hilton and many other outwardly Pro-Gay media outlets that didn’t exist, 20, 10 or even 5 years ago. We are now a matter of months, not years, from the point where using a gay slur will be seen as no different from using the “N” word, and with all the career ending baggage that entails.
Winklevoss Twins Want to Sue Facebook Again
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Media, reputation management, Social Media on December 31, 2010
$65 million isn’t enough! The Winklevoss Twins want to sue Facebook for even more money. They made a firm agreement to accept the $65 million a few years back and be on their way. But now they’ve changed their mind and want to cancel the agreement. Isn’t it a bit unseemly, even un-gentlemanly to break one’s word Misters Winklevoss? If this is all about honor, aren’t you behaving without honor?
These boys better how they never face a jury. Two incredibly rich, tall, good-looking guys who grew up in Greenwich and get to spend their time being medal-winning Olympic atheltes dont elicit much sympathy, even if they do have a good point or tow.

Henry Kissinger Plays Damage Control – Two Weeks Later
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, Media Training, public relations, reputation management on December 26, 2010
Henry Kissinger got in trouble a few weeks ago when tapes surfaced. He is heard on the 1973 tapes saying, “The emigration of Jews from the Soviet Union is not an objective of American foreign policy. And if they put Jews into gas chambers in the Soviet Union, it is not an American concern. Maybe a humanitarian concern.”
Yikes!
Shaquille O’Neal Continues to Lead PR Charm Offensive On Boston
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Communications, media relations, public relations, reputation management on December 24, 2010
Shaquille O’Neal is now Boston’s leading scorer. I don’t mean on the basketball court, but in the court of public opinion. He is everywhere in Boston and he is making himself fun, lovable and cuddly. The New York Times profiles Shaq’s aggressive, unorthodox and comprehensive PR blitz on Beantown. From the basketball court to the symphony to organizing snowball fights, Shaq is becoming an All-Star celebrity with few peers.
Growing Backlash to VH1 show “Mob Wives”
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Media, reputation management on December 23, 2010
A lot of my friends here in the New York City media world wonder why they are so hated by the public. It’s not from asking pesky questions of politicians and press conferences. It’s from putting on shows like “Mob Wives.” I’m all in favor of fictional dramas like “The sopranos” that show mob characters in a nuanced light. But to glorify real people who benefit financially in a massive way becaseu their family members KILL human beings just goes too far. Are we really that far away from a TV Network buying an island, becoming its own country where it can write laws, and then filming a version of Survivor where the winner literally has to kill all the others?
Funny Attack video made Against New ABC News Honcho Ben Sherwood

Ben Sherwood:The Movie from Roone Arledge on Vimeo.
You’ve got to watch this to believe it. People really seem to hate this guy. Is this the next trend in office politics, the attack video? It looks like it’s really going to pay off to start being nice to everyone, or at least anyone who knows how to edit video.

Haley Barbour yesterday has stopped the hemorrhaging of blood from Barbour’s political body. Now, he’s floating the idea of giving a big “race speech” next May.
