Victory Speech Assessments – Marco Rubio and Rand Paul

Both Senators-elect gave strong victory speeches. They were forceful, enthusiastic and spoke of first principles. Paul was quite eloquent with his Jefferson quotes and Rubio was passionate in telling his life history as the son of exiles. Both avoided any bitterness or griping toward their opponents. Both seemed gracious. You can expect to see a lot of them on the national seen in the coming months.
Anti-Rand Paul Groups attacking his Religious beliefs
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, Politics, public relations, reputation management on October 31, 2010
Democratic leaning groups in Kentucky are attacking Rand Paul over his religious beliefs. They may have a fair point, given his college pranks surrounding the “aqua Buddha” and his family’s close ties with the atheistic Ayn Rand movement. still, I think this will backfire, given Paul’s regular involvement with a conventional protestant church. The attacks will seem cheap and further energize the Paul supporters. More at AP

Rand Paul Coordinator who attacked woman wants her to Apologize
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, Media, Politics, public relations, reputation management on October 28, 2010

I saw this headline and I thought it was a joke put out by the Daily Show. Is this woman supposed to say “I’m sorry that my head accidentally got in the way of your foot?”
What was a one day story is now getting worse. If you didn’t hear the first time that Tim Profitt, the man who smashed the woman’s head with his foot, was also an official Rand Paul county coordinator, you have now. It one thing to attract jerks to vote for you, but when they are an official part of your campaign it makes undecided voters think twice about you. Fortunately for Paul, the political zeitgeist this year seems to favor him so heavily that this won’t be the deciding issue it could have been. More at Talking Points Memo.

Yes, I know, there can be thugs in all campaigns in any party. But Rand Paul surely did’t relish this headline in the Washington Post:
“Woman attacked by Rand Paul supporters has concussion, sprained arm, MoveOn says”

Short takes – sound bites from TJ
Kanye West has been invited back to the MTV Video Music Awards show. Prediction: he won’t be grabbing the mic from Taylor Swift or anyone else this year. In fact, there may be a few sketches where other people grab the mic out of his had repeatedly. It will help his image if he went along with the skit good-naturedly.
Rand Paul finally denied the charges that he kidnapped a woman while he was in college. He went 24 hours before making the denial—a major strategic blunder. Worse, his apology seemed weasily because he conflated the charges that he had been abducted by aliens with the charges that he had kidnapped a woman and said that “they” were untrue. This was either a sloppy apology or he really isn’t denying the kidnapping charges. Expect this issue to get further play in the campaign.

The NYTimes reports that HP’s Pr firm made a strong case for sacking CEO Mark Hurd. From a PR standpoint, the media mess would not have been worth the fight to defend Hurd, never mind that no actual sex took place in the “affair.” It looks like bad news for HP investors is at least good news for the PR industry being taken more seriously.
Forbes announces that some of its bloggers will be paid based on page views. While I do believe in using metrics and holding people accountable, I think we can safely predict a rise in the number of stories with titles such as “Is Megan Fox a rising twitter star?” and “The economics of Brittany Spears naked photos on her fan page.”
