Public speaking moment of the day: LeBron James confronts his heckler in Detroit

by Mike Bako -At this point in his career Lebron James has heard it all from opposing fans. The boos, the cheers, the cursing and through it all he has continuously preformed at a high level. At times it almost seemed like he used it as fuel to reach even greater heights.
So why did he decide to verbally confront a fan in Detroit over heckling that he was receiving? It certainly was not the first time he had heard it from the Detroit crowd. What was different this time was that his small children were nearby and he did not want them hearing the curses coming out of the fans mouth.
French President Nicholas Sarkozy Speaks Out Against Multiculturalism

Sarkozy joins leaders from Britain, Germany and Spain who have all spoken out against multiculturalism. Sarkozy also proclaims that multiculturalism has been a “failure.”
How will liberal democracies continue to assimilate immigrants? The key word is assimilate, in the eyes of these leaders. This battle is going to continue to brew and we are going to see more and more speeches on this topic in the months and years to come.
Sarah Palin to Survey Her Future Domain
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Authors Corner, Best Speaker of the Day, Debate Central, Government & Politics on November 12, 2010
Sarah Palin is hitting the road to campaign for big sales of her new book “America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag.” I have to wonder though is she hitting the road to drum up big sales for her book or to lay the groundwork for a potential presidential run in 2012. The list of cities that she is hitting are heavy on republican red and includes two spots in Iowa.
I think this is a great move by her and her political team as well as her publisher. She gets the dual publicity of promoting her book as well as keeping her name right in the forefront of everyone’s mind as a political candidate. Add in the fact that her new TLC show will be debuting this week and you have a multimedia barrage of Palin without her having to expend any political capitol. Read the rest of this entry »
Jon Stewart is Askmen.com’s Most influential Man for 2010
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, celebrities, Communications, Government & Politics, Media, media relations, public relations, reputation management on October 28, 2010

Something tells me President Obama still wouldn’t change places with Stewart (though after Republicans take over the House, Obama might be tempted to). On the one hand, polls like this are a silly media institution. What they really are measuring is this “Of people who are famous and on TV a lot, who do you generally find likable and who seems to have an idea of what is good and bad in the world?” By that standard, I can see why lots of men picked Stewart. And this is a proud day for Stewart. After all, it’s really hard to be funny, and it’s really hard to talk about politics with a point of view without making people hate you or fall asleep. Stewart walks on a lot of land minds here regularly and he does it brilliantly. More at AskMen.com

What is the best way for me to start my presentation?
Posted by TJ Walker in Fear of Speaking, Presentation Skills Training, Public Speaking Skills on August 20, 2008
There is no one perfect way to start a presentation. You don’t have to tell a knee-slapping joke or start with a poignant anecdote. But you don’t want to start the way most presenters do. Why? Because most presenters start of by talking about themselves too much.
As a presenter, you have to make one fundamental choice about how you start: are you going to focus on yourself, or on your audience? If you focus on your audience, you will likely be a success. If you focus on yourself, no matter how polished you are, you will likely fail.
Here’s how most people start a presentation.
“Good morning. My name is TJ Walker (the audience already knows this because I was just introduced or my name is on the agenda).â€
