Heidi Fleiss has a deal to do a TV pilot for Animal Planet, about birds
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Communications, Media, media relations, reputation management on December 5, 2010
Prediction: this pilot will never air. At some point a producer is going to sit up at a meeting at the Animal Planet headquarters and say “What? Are we crazy??? It’s Heidi Fleiss. People only associate her with prostitutes, Charlie sheen and sleaze, but I repeat myself.”
It’s great that Heidi may have gone through rehab for chemical addictions. But there is no image rehab center that can turn prostitute madams into a host mom’s want their kids to watch on TV talking about animals. If Heidi wants to be on TV, she should talk to the Adult Late Night department at HBO. More at TMZ
Is Mike Huckabee Developing a Palinphobia?

Signs that Sarah Palin is sucking all the air out of the room for other Republican Candidates:
From the Guardian today:
Anti-Facebook minister who advises couples on how to avoid temptation likes to have threesomes with wife and male church member

Here’s a general PR rule of thumb I give to my clients who pay me a small fortune, but you are getting it for free:
“Don ‘t seek the national spotlight giving advice to couples on how to be sexually pure if you are already quoted extensively in public court records talking about the threesomes you had with your wife and some guy at your church.”*

Bill Clinton to have Cameo role in The Hangover 2?
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Crisis Communications, media relations, public relations, reputation management on November 15, 2010
Those are the reports. There was a time, say 8 years ago or so, when this would have been seen as risky for him. It would bring up too many memories of why people didn’t like Bill Clinton. But Clinton’s reputation is solidified these days in the world community. He’s seen as a tireless advocate for great world causes including, starvation, peace, and victims of disaster. Outside of Rush Limbaugh ditto-heads, it’s rare to find any thoughtful person who doesn’t believe Bill Clinton isn’t an exemplary ex-President. If he wants to joke around and have a little fun on the set of Hangover 2, it’s not exactly as though he’s frittering his life or his potential away. Have fun Mr. President! More at TMZ.
Forget about Being “discovered” on Oprah
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Communications, Media, public relations on November 15, 2010
The Oprah show is winding down. That means a whole generation of authors, self-help gurus, and other BS artists of varying quality are going to have to forget about Oprah anointing them. Instead, people are going to have to go out and build an audience the old-fashion way, by actually going on lots of TV and radio shows every month, blogging every day, writing books that people actually want to read, etc.
Oprah has had a great show—there’s no doubt. But there are thousands of would-be information gurus who have frittered away years of their lives trying to get on Oprah when what they should have been doing is building their businesses one satisfied customer at a time. Now, thankfully, they will have one fewer distraction.
New ad campaign for “Call of Duty: Black Ops” video campaign is under attack
Posted by TJ Walker in advertising, Communications, Media on November 11, 2010
Folks at The Atlantic are having a hissy fit over the new ad campaign for Call of Duty: Black Ops. The prissy advertising watchdogs need to stop worrying about phony problems like ads for video games. There is real unambiguous violence in the world and that is what should be denounced.
I played cops and robbers as a kid and have so far been able to control myself from shooting anyone in real life. What country has the highest rate of violent video game use in the world? Japan. What country has about the lowest rate of murder and violence in the world? Japan! Can you connect the dots?

Keith Olbermann will be Back!
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Media, public relations on November 8, 2010
Here is the statement from NBC. So how does this whole thing play out for Olbermann? As the old saying goes, that which doesn’t kill you strengthens you. Olbermann comes out of the brouhaha stronger than ever. He’s gotten more attention in the last several days than he has in the previous five years—most of it positive. More than a quarter of a million fans signed on to have him re-instated. And he is guaranteed to have some huge ratings this week.
Al this, and without even having to go to rehab or confess to a drug problem or an affair—all in all, a good week for Olbermann
Creative PR stunt of the Day – A Kiss-in for the Pope
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Communications, public relations, Uncategorized on November 6, 2010
Gays and lesbians in Spain are planning on greeting the Pope with a massive kiss-in. Now that’s creative, non-confrontational, respectful and designed to generate massive worldwide publicity. More at The Guardian.
Two different victory speeches – from the same race?
Posted by TJ Walker in Government & Politics on November 5, 2010
Both candidates for governor in Connecticut have made victory speeches. apparently the race is still too close to call and both candidates are mindful of the lessons of Florida 2000: if you appear to accept that the other guy has won, the courts, media and voters may accept it too. Someone’s victory speech was pre-mature, but both were strategically necessary. More at the NYTtimes.
David Cassidy arrested for DUI
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Communications, Crisis Communications, public relations, reputation management on November 4, 2010
Why do celebrities drive their own cars? if they ever mess up, they are guaranteed tens of millions of dollars worth of negative publicity–wouldn’t it cost a fraction of that to just take a cab? I don’t know if Cassidy was guilty or not; he blew way over the limit on 2 separate breathalyser tests. He claims he wasn’t drinking but had taken a pill for back pain earlier. It might be true, but it’s not very believable. More at TMZ.
John Boehner—the Blubberer

John Boehner gave one of the weirdest and worst victory speeches I’ve ever seen last night. Unlike Marco Rubio and Rand Paul who gave great speeches, Boehner’s was just odd, and not just because of the crying.
In the beginning, Boehner was stumbling over words and giving nearly zero eye contact to his audience, as if he were a first-time candidate and not an 11-term incumbent career politician. Boehner was reading the boiler-plate speech as if it never would have occurred to him to say “cut taxes” or “give the government back to the people” without a script.
President Obama will hold a press conference Wednesday at 1:00 PM
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, Media, Politics, public relations, Public Speaking Skills, reputation management, Uncategorized on November 2, 2010
What will/should the President say?
The President will try to establish a tone that is positive and upbeat to contrast with those who will say his presidency is finished and that Obama should be suicidal. He must seem mildly chastened, but still seem powerful, in control and filled with historical perspective. Expect to hear references to Clinton and his mid-term losses in 1994 and Reagan’s losses in 1982.
U.S Senate Candidate Joe Miller runs for office with…a Beard?
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Body Language, Communications, Crisis Communications, Media, Politics, public relations, Public Speaking Skills on October 30, 2010
Joe Miller isn’t going to become the next Senator from Alaska. In fact, he is likely not to even come in second place. He will be in thrid, partly because he was a horrible candidate, but partly, because he has a beard. Rightly or wrongly, voters don’t like poltiicans with beards. Beards suggest a certain rebelliousness that voters just don’t seem to be comfortable with, unless you take a time capsule back to Abe Lincoln’s day.

Is Todd Combs have what it takes to fill Warren Buffett’s shoes?
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, CEOs/Financial, Communications, Crisis Communications, Media, media relations, public relations, reputation management on October 30, 2010
OK, I understand Todd Combs never would have been anointed by Warren Buffett to run things at Berkshire if Combs had been the typical fund manager who spends more time in the makeup chair at CNBC than behind a a terminal. Still, combs can’t even provide of photo of himself to the financial press?

Who is he replacing, Warren Buffett or Howard Hughes? Combs leaned quickly yesterday that if you don’t give the media what they want, they will take what they can get, even if it makes you look like a fool.
A Lady Gaga Class on the Sociology of Fame?
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, celebrities, Communications, Media, public relations, reputation management on October 30, 2010
Something tells me this class will be a little more popular than Civil War history 101, even though the class is being offered by the University of South Carolina. Read more about it here in the New York Times. My take on Gaga is that she is a relentless worker, isn’t afraid to be outrageous, and she’s constantly changing her image, outfits and ideas. She’s a relentless marketer. She is willing to say and do absolutely anything. And she has, deep in her closet, a dog-eared copy of “How to be like Madonna.” (that’s not an insult: it’s good to learn from the master)
First, the
