ABC Reporter Attempts To Explain The Budget With $100 In Pennies -VIDEO

Give ABC’s Jonathan Karl some credit. The guy’s creative–and willing to risk the snarky ridicule of those media websites. In an effort to explain the federal budget, Karl got his hands on $100 in pennies, and then proceded to cover a conference room table with them–all divided up according to the spending in the president’s budget.

George Lopez Is (Sort of, in 8 years) Planning On Running For Mayor Of Los Angeles
Posted by TJ Walker in Uncategorized on December 22, 2010
I don’t place a lot of stock in what people say their are going to do in eight years, but Lopez may have many of the raw talents needed to be a successful politician. He has high name ID, rich friends, money, and an ability to communicate well through the media. Governor Arnold’s mixed success not withstanding, I expect more and more movie and TV stars to take up politics in the future (especially when they are past their prime and can no longer generate huge Hollywood paydays).
Paul Krugman Claims Obama’s Rhetoric is Killing Him Politically
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, Presentation Skills Training, public relations, Public Speaking Skills, reputation management on December 20, 2010
Paul Krugman makes a great case that Obama’s incessant rhetorical overtures to Republicans, i.e. praising Ronald Reagan and his policies, has had a counterproductive result. Krugman maintains that Obama is providing cover for his ideological enemies and enabling economic policies against his administration’s interests. Krugman also points out that you never hear a conservative or a Republican praising the economic policies of FDR.
Great points. Yes, there is a need for civility and bi-partisanship in politics, but if you are constantly praising your ideological adversaries, your own arguments will begin to lose their punch.
Senate passes bill allowing Gays in the Military
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Government & Politics, media relations, Politics, reputation management on December 19, 2010
If people are looking for a reason why the Congress is held in such low regard, they should start with an issue like “Gays in the military.” To most Americas, whether they are Democrat or Republican, Liberal, Moderate or Conservative, this is such an old, tired issue. It seems as relevant as a debate on whether communism is better than capitalism.
Most Americans, whether they are in the military or not, simply have bigger things to worry about than whether someone is gay. For the Senate to debate and debate and debate like this is a really big deal sends a loud and clear message to most Americans: “Your Senate is out of touch, committed to wasting time, and is about 15 years behind the thinking of most normal Americans.”
Poll: Americans hate Congress more than ever

Only 13% of Americans approve of congress. What does this mean? Not much. Members of congress don’t see the need to “sell” congress.
Members don’t have to make “congress” popular; they only have to make themselves more popular than the opponent running in their district. To that extent, congress is the same now as it has always been; every member there is at least more popular by a minimum of one vote than anyone else in their district who was also interested in being a member of Congress.

This story has bigger legs than I originally though it would have. One of the hallmarks of begin down in politics is that all news about you is incredibly bad news. Obama is in that phase now. Watch this hilarious Chinese animation video and the whole incident.
Former Democratic Senator Mike Gravel considering running against Obama?
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Government & Politics, Media Training, Politics on December 11, 2010
Should Obama be worried? Does Gravel have the ability to communicate on behalf of disaffected Democrats and liberals? No. Gravel ran in 2008 and did nothing but strike people as a goof-ball. He even suggests he thinks the government might have somehow been involved with 9/11. Obama may have a serious democratic challenger in 2012, but Gravel doesn’t have the gravitas or the political skills to communicate the case against Obama. More at Mediate.
Gravel dies star in the funniest political ad ever. check this out.
Is Hillary Clinton Dropping Hints?
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Communications, Government & Politics, media relations, Politics on December 3, 2010
Hillary Clinton told the media today in Bahrain that her current job would be her last in public life. Is this significant? I’m not so sure. Who hasn’t had a bad day and thought, enough of this already? Still, I can imagine Hillary taking a few years off and then running for President in 2016. One you have become a presidential candidate, you are presumed to be a presidential candidate for the rest of your life—that’s just the way it goes. More at Mediaite.

Communications Guru David Axelrod to leave the White House to prepare for 2012 Campaign
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, Media, Politics, reputation management on November 15, 2010
Seven Questions for David Axelrod:
- “Change” was a great mega-theme for 2008. What’s going to be your big theme for 2012?
- What’s the number one reason why people should re-elect Obama?
- Is activist government spending during a recession/depression a good thing or not? Your team and all moderate/liberal economists say yes. But now Obama is tactility endorsing conservative philosophies by emphasizing a want/need to cut spending.
- What’s the number one thing wrong/bad with the conservative/Republican philosophy toward government?
- Is Obama a liberal, moderate or a conservative? He seems to change every day and convince people he is whatever they like least.
- Most economists on your side believe that if government spending is cut even slightly, then unemployment will either stay the same or get worse. Given that the Republican-controlled House has vowed to cut spending, how can you possibly get re-elected if unemployment is nearly 10% for most of Obama’s term?
- Can you talk Obama out of his whole “let’s get along, let’s put partisan politics aside, Republicans have good ideas too” attitude and rhetoric, or will he have to be impeached or lose in a 49 state landslide first?
Haley Barbour yesterday has stopped the hemorrhaging of blood from Barbour’s political body. Now, he’s floating the idea of giving a big “race speech” next May.
