This New Media Thing may be going one step too far

An NYU professor is having a surgery to implant a camera in the back of his head. I’m all for creative uses of technology to enable communication, but this goes too far. Lets’ hope the surgeons do a little extra surgery on the brain when they are in there doing the implant in the skull. More at the Wall Street Journal.

White Pages Phone Book RIP, can Yellow Pages be far behind?

Three more states have granted permission to their phone companies to STOP printing phone books. Can the rest be far behind? Whether it is practical, cost, or environmental concerns, I’d hate to be the regulator making the case requiring phone companies to print white pages anymore.

While it’s true that historically new media don’t replace old media (TV didn’t replace radio), there are exceptions. We don’t write on many stone tablets these days nor do we communicate on CB radios. White pages, I’m afraid your final days are very near.

Official White House Videographer has his hands full

The Times Runs a lengthy profile of Arun Chaundhary, the White House videographer. He’s the first one of his kind. Does this make him a sinister propagandist? Hardly. It’s about time the highest levels of government realized that video is equal or more important to text.

The 6 Hottest Journalistic Startups for 2010 – Business Insider

Here’s an interesting look at 6 well-funded journalistic start-ups. I’m not sure that any of these will be around in three years. The most promising startups, I suspect, are done by individuals and don’t have any venture capital or large media parent companies. See for yourself at Business Insider.

Prediction: Fox will not hire Christine O’Donnell

Last night, Keith Olberman predicted on MSNBC that Fox News Chanel would likely be the new host on Fox and Friends on the Fox News Channel. He was kidding, sort of . Today, Mediaite.com had the temerity to ask Fox if they were going to hire O’donnell and a response came back “no plans to hire her.”

Fox News honcho Roger Ailes is shrewd enough to know how to go right up to the line without crossing it. He hires scholarly conservatives with Harvard advanced degrees like Charles Krauthammer. He hires people with long time news credentials (and attitude) and advanced Harvard degrees like Bill O’Reilly. He’ll even hire Sarah Palin who says a lot of wacky stuff, but was almost the 2nd most powerful person on the planet. But I can’t imagine Ailes ever hiring O’Donnell because even though she says many of the things said by paid commentators and guests on Fox, she is known primarily for saying things that make the average person think that conservatives are really, really stupid. And if it’s one thing Ailes is good at, it’s not making conservatives look stupid.

News Corp puts MySpace on double Secret Space

We’ve all become accustomed to reading stories about old-time newspapers getting warned to shape up or be shut down. But MySpace! They were the darling of the Internet world just 5 years ago. Now, the shine is off and it is losing money. Rupert Murdoch has put them on notice: no more losing money! How can an internet company that still has more than a hundred million members, tons of traffic and no paper/printing costs lose money? Easy, same way as old-media newspapers. When you get used to revenue at a level of X, you set up an infrastructure and an overhead equal to X. Once things shrink to X-Y, no one ever seems fast enough to make the necessary cuts to keep things profitable.

The even bigger problem for MySpace? Its whole claim to fame is that this is where the cool, hip and young hang out online. Now that they’ve been eclipsed by Facebook, Twitter, foursquare, etc, it’s tough to get back that mantle. It’s like Henry Winkler as the Fonz trying to become the new star of Entourage; it just wouldn’t work, no matter how cool he was back in the day.

New Study: Electronic media jumbling the brains of kids

A new study says that electronic media before bedtime makes mush out of kids and their sleep habits. Really? This is hardly surprising. Parents need to take away the cell phones a half hour before bedtime and give their kids a good book to read (even if it’s on a Kindle) and for younger kids, parent should read to them at bedtime (and no, I don’t mean read emails). More here.

Texting Replaces Chatting among Teens

I have to confess this seems a little odd to me. Teenagers don’t have jobs (for the most part), don’t have to do much of anything past 2:30 in the afternoon, don’t have to do anything in the summer. Why don’t they want to call their friends and BS? they have more time than they will ever have again for the rest of their lives? Here is the research.

Is there a tipping point for new media? New York Times makes the case – social media

The Times makes a persuasive point that there is no longer a meaningful distinction between old and new media. However, there is a distinction between small lean companies with growing revenues versus old, big companies with declining revenues. It’s worth a read.

Beware False Social Media Prophets

I am constantly amazed at how many people I know selling their services as social media experts, how to make money using social media and how to build a social media business. The shocking thing is that when I dig a little deeper to check out their background, I invariably find out that they don’t have any real social media successes or audiences to speak of.

One well known sales guru I know just did a big workshop on how speakers can use social media to build their business. He doesn’t even have a blog! Good Lord!

Citing a new Ipsos OTX study of 7,000 online consumers ages 13 to 74, Friend said that thanks to smartphones and laptops, people are now spending one-half of their waking days interacting with media, and have increased their media consumption by an hour per day over the last two years.
