Los Angeles Restaurant OUTS Mean Restaurant Critic

For anyone who has ever had a beef with a mainstream media review or criticism, this story will warm your heart. A Los Angeles restaurant spotted a notoriously harsh restaurant critic for the Los Angeles Times, took her picture, and then asked her to leave. Now her identity is know to all restaurants and her usefulness to the Times as an anonymous food critic has been compromised.

On this one, I am going to side with the restaurant. There is something out of balance when someone can destroy a business with the power of the media and yet expect or demand that the media spotlight will never be turned the other way. I also think that just as there are term limits for politicians, terms limits for restaurant critics would be a good idea too. If you eat at utterly fantastic restaurants 6 times a week, even the pretty good ones seem awful in comparison after awhile.

Paul Krugman Exposes Disinformation Campaign Regarding Government Workers

I understand that if you are a ocnservative Republican you will hate Paul Krugman, but if you have any sort of an independent mindset then you Will find his column today on right-wing disinformation campaigns to be both fascinating and chilling. It’s here in the New York Times.

Rev. Pat Robertson, Soft on Drugs?

The News is what is unusual and unexpected. That’s why right-wing conservative Pat Robertson is all over the media today with his announcement that he thinks people shouldn’t be put in jail for smoking a little pot. I can’t think of anything more unlikely unless Rep. Barney Frank were to suddenly introduce a bill to ban Gay marriage forever. More at Mediaite.

ABC News’ Jake Tapper Asks Obama Tough Question

Jake Tapper showed yesterday why he is a highly skilled media pro. Here was his question to Obama:

“is it intellectually consistent to say that gays and lesbians should be able to fight and die for this country, but they should not be able to marry the people they love?”

Funny Attack video made Against New ABC News Honcho Ben Sherwood

Ben Sherwood:The Movie from Roone Arledge on Vimeo.

You’ve got to watch this to believe it. People really seem to hate this guy. Is this the next trend in office politics, the attack video? It looks like it’s really going to pay off to start being nice to everyone, or at least anyone who knows how to edit video.

Rep. Barney Frank Makes Monkey Out of conservative “Reporter”

Career Advice, If You Declare War On Rupert Murdoch, don’t Tell Anyone

British Business Minister Vince Cable said he was “declaring war” on Rupert Murdoch and a reporter got wind of it. And Now Mr. Cable has lost a great deal of his powers.

Lesson: everyone is in favor of strong, forceful, direct language–until they aren’t. There is a reason government officials should bureaucratic and boring sometimes. It’s because they are supposed to be impartial and fair to everyone. When you say how you really feel, you upset too many people and then you get sacked.

Betty Ford Staffer Fired For Talking to TMZ

It’s important to realize that although we live in a world where everyone is more open and where transparency and sharing are prized values, there is a downside. Employers also have rights. One of those rights is to give privacy to their clients and customers. Another is to use the freedom of speech to say “you are fired” to any employee caught breaking confidentiality rules.

Harold “Hal” Turner, the blogger and Internet radio host Sentencted to 33 months in Prison

This is the jerk who thought it would be cute to advocate killing three Federal Judges because he didn’t like their opinions. “Hal” is why bloggers and internet radio talk show hosts have a bad reputation.

Freedom of speech is not and has never been unlimited. You can’t advocate violence and death to people, especially government officials. Here’s hoping “Hal” gets a tough prison with no Internet connection allowed.

Film Director Jafar Panahi Sentenced to 6 Years in Prison

Now THAT’S what I call censorship. It’s important to realize in a world where people cry “censorship” ever two seconds just because some didn’t like or buy their movie or book, that real censorship exists where governments stop artists and journalists from communicating their work.

CBS Wants Katie Couric, but With a PayCut

The Audience for the CBS Evening News is down nearly 25% since Katie Couric took over. So why not just cut Katie’s pay 25% and call it a day? That seems fair. Broadcasters ultimately make their pay by delivering eyeballs. Katie delivers more than almost anyone on Cable, so sure, give her a big paycheck. But last time I checked, 75% of $15 million is still enough to buy, well, anything you could possibly dream of. Prediction: Couric will stay at CBS, and work more for less, kind of like everyone else in the media and every other industry these days, only she’ll do it with a few more zeros on her paycheck than most. CBS might not be that happy with Couric’s performance, but no one there has any idea on who or what could do any better. More at Bloomberg.

Why Perez Hilton TV is the Future of Television

Take a look at a recent episode of Perez Hilton TV. Whether you care about celebrities and Hollywood Gossip is irrelevant. The key thing is that he has a tiny studio, a simple two camera shoot, a minimum of editing, a simple graphic backdrop and a one guest, one-host format. And he is leveraging his existing traffic from his blog consisting of text and pictures to his newer medium of video. This is the future, regardless of your industry or niche.

Craigslist shuts down its “Adult Services” Section on sites Worldwide

Craigslist has learned an old but important lesson the hard way: you will be judged by the company you keep. Craigslist has taken a lot of heat in the US for its sections that advertise for prostitution and other unsavory acts. Now, the worldwide pressure has mounted and Craigslist is throwing in the towel (or off the towel?) on this whole sleaze business.

Craigslist is a great business, but let’s not kid ourselves when it comes to their ethics. Just because something is legal (or in this case the legal liability can be plausibly denied) doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do.

Winona Ryder claims to have never used the Internet or read a blog

So is this the path to success? Only if you are already success and have been famous for more than 15 years, as in the case of Ryder.

While it’s certainly true that a lot of people waste a great deal of time on the internet and through social media trying to advance their careers without much to show for it, Winona’s method isn’t the answer either. If you think you can just sit back and read books, attend parties or shoplift your time away and be successful like Ryder, think again. Ryder has been able to leverage her A-level fame to get other people to talk about her and promote her on the Internet every minute of the day.

Time Magazine Exclusive interview with Sarah Palin…or was it?

Current Time.com Cover
Time has a cover story on Sarah Palin, which normally implies hours and hours together in person with a subject. Or at least a few hours by phone. It turns out, this whole interview was done by email between a time reporter and Palin, or at least the reporter thinks it might have been Palin, but then it could have been Willow or Trig. I pity the poor news weekly trying to remain relevant in today’s 24/7 digital environment. Now candidates aren’t even willing to return their phone calls. With US News and Newsweek getting sucked up into a black hole (definitely not black ink!) can Time be far behind?
