How Do You Media Train Police Officers? -Media Training
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Media Training on August 8, 2011

Question:
I have a possibility of doing some training with police here in New Zealand. How would you train police officers on the beat to deal with pushy journalist who arrive at the scene of a crime they are dealing with? They may want basic information, or more detail. These may be low ranking police.
I know the relationship between police and media is not great here.
7 Communications Lessons From NJ Gov. Chris Christie That Every Democrat Needs To Learn -Media Training
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Body Language, CEOs/Financial on August 5, 2011

You might think that Chris Christie is nothing more than Ann Coulter force fed a Duncan Donuts factory, but the guy is a fantastic, powerful communicator. Your first image of him might be of the demagogue vilifying a school teacher or defending the indefensible use of a state helicopter to attend his son’s ballgame but if you haven’t seen Christie defend his selection of a Muslim American to a high level judgeship, then I beg you, please watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y83z552NJaw
If it’s one thing every single Democrat and liberal can agree on it’s that Republicans and conservatives are the masters at attacking Democrats for supporting unpopular or minority positions or people and putting Progressives on the defensive. Republicans have destroyed many Democrats in the polls by making them appear wimpy and cowardly when defending unpopular decisions or positions. Christie reveals exactly how Liberals should defend themselves for maximum political benefit.

Gov. Christie Defends Appointing Muslim Judge -Media Training
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Best Speaker of the Day, Video on August 4, 2011
Gov. Christie did what I think should be the textbook example of what any politician, on either side, should do when put in a position to explain a choice they made.
He did not defend, he attacked. This is what I liked about Christie’s approach. He attacked so forcefully that he almost made the reporter asking the questions embarrassed for bringing up the subject.
TJ Walker interviewed by The Gatekeepers Post
Q: How do you get started as a public speaker?
TJ: By speaking at every opportunity I had, including elementary school graduation, student government in junior high, and as a campaign surrogate in college.
Q: If someone doesn’t have the budget to pay you, should you still do the gig?
TJ: It depends. If it is local, usually yes. How can they help you if they aren’t paying cash. An organization could give you $10,000 worth of ads in their newsletter or website if they don’t pay you hard cash. Always ask. Is the audience full of thousands of people who will likely hire you in the future? Then maybe it is a yes. But if it is a Toastmaster club in another city, then the answer is no (even though I like Toastmasters and will speak to them if they are in the city I am in at that time).
Everyone speaks for free from time to time—don’t kid yourself. Bono, speaks and performs for “free” when he goes on the Today Show. You have to pick and choose on a case-by-case basis. Read the rest of this entry »

Aim For All Three Message Points. In Every Answer -Media Training
Of all of the advice I give to my media training clients regarding answering questions in a media interview, the hardest concept for people to grasp is the need to communicate all three of your message points in every answer (that’s EVERY answer). When I tell people this, they think that I am kidding, or they think that I meant to say, “All three message points during the courseof the interview.” That’s not what I am saying. I urge people to try to say all three of their message points in every single answer.
“But TJ,” they cry. “I’ll sound insane! Reporters will run away from me.”

Paris Hilton Storms Out On GMA. How NOT To Handle A Negative Question
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, celebrities, Crisis Communications on July 21, 2011
No matter who you are or what the media outlet is you should always be prepared for a negative question. As you can see here Paris Hilton was not.
After some coaching and prodding from her PR team Paris actually comes back out to give a pretty coherent answer. Too bad she did not practice and rehearse the situation in the first place so that she would be prepared.
An Experts Dilemma -Media Training
There are two types of experts in the world. One type prides himself in being able to think and speak in a logical, rational, linear, detailed, abstract and conceptual manner. This type is often so identified with his logical, rational intellect that he is unable to communicate in any other manner. Accordingly, this expert tends to remain mired in obscurity. While he may have had numerous media interview opportunities, somehow they never turn out quite right. In fact, this expert is rarely quoted, and when he is quoted, he is usually upset that the “stupid reporter picked such a lousy or irrelevant quote.” Over time, he seeks out the media less and less, and his media interview opportunities become fewer. He takes comfort in the fact that he never “sold out” like so many other “media whores” in his profession. Our friend is “pure,” albeit highly obscure.

Are beauty pageants sexist relics from the past, or are they modern tools for empowering women?
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Best Speaker of the Day, Body Language, celebrities on July 12, 2011

Actually, they are both. I’ve just returned from judging my second European beauty pageant and I can tell you that people are as fascinated as ever by beauty contests. Some people love them. Others despise them. I seem to be in the minority in that I really don’t have strong views either way.
To me, the fascinating thing about beauty pageants (beyond the pretty young women, of course) is that they do two things highly relevant to future business success:

Home Run Derby Batters To Interact Live With Fans Via Twitter

by Mike Bako
Major League Baseball has long been criticized for not being in step with new technologies and for not reaching out to its younger fan base.
On Tuesday night MLB is taking a great step in a positive direction by having participants on its annual home run derby Tweet and interact with fans while they are in the middle of competition.
Most leagues specifically ban players from Tweeting during games. Granted, this is not a real game and only an exhibition, but it shows that MLB is letting down its guard and fully embracing a technology that most of their younger fans use every hour of the day.
Now if they could only work on starting some of their post season games a little earlier than 8:30PM and they would be onto something. Read the rest of this entry »
Are Chinese Small Caps The Greatest Investment Opportunity Ever, Or Are They All Fraudulent Con Operations?

I have a new venture, the PitchingWell, that provides a forum for small cap companies and investors. We do TV and radio interviews with CEOs and other interesting experts for the small cap community.
Currently, I face a dilemma, do I include Chinese small cap companies or not into the mix? If I leave them out, am I guilty of racism and denying my web visitors valuable insights into a huge growing market? If I include CEOs from Chinese small caps, am I exposing my web visitors to a massive likelihood of being defrauded?
There is no easy answer, especially for a start-up media site like mine that doesn’t have massive funds for researching each company. Read the rest of this entry »
How NOT To Stay On Your Message Points During A Media Interview
Britain’s Labor Part leader Ed Miliband could not have produced a worse example of someone staying on their message points if they tried in his recent BBC interview.
We tell our clients to develop three message points and stick with them throughout the interview. Pepper in sound bites to make your answers more quotable and you have a winning combination.
Sweat Lodge ‘Guru’ Found Guilty
James Arthur Ray, the self-help guru who had appeared on Oprah, was found guilty Wednesday of negligent homicide in the deaths of three people who died during a sweat-lodge ceremony he hosted in 2009. Fifty-six people had paid $10,000 each to attend the event, which Ray would help them achieve their full potential. They signed waivers acknowledging death was a risk; still, Ray encouraged them to ignore signs of distress. Ray was acquitted of more serious manslaughter charges. He could face anything from probation up to 11 years in prison.
Here are past comments and analysis from TJ Walker on the Ray case:

The fastest way to upset your client base if you are an internet hosting service is to have your system hacked and have all your sites go down.
The second fastest way to upset your client base is to go on social media channels two days later declaring that the problem is solved and everything is back to business as usual but still have clients who have their sites down.
What’s the easiest way to distract your audience? Wear something like this!
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, Best Speaker of the Day, Body Language on June 21, 2011

What is the quickest and easiest way to have an audience not remember a word of what you say during a media interview? Wear something so loud and outrageous that they spend all their time looking at what you are wearing and no time actually listening to what you are saying.
If you are a fashion designer or famous actor it might fit your image to be a little outrageous with your wardrobe choices. On Tuesday this Bloomberg guest wore a cow print blazer for his spot analyzing hedge funds and I doubt anyone can remember a single fund or point he made, no matter how good they may have been.

Mainstream media stars – end of an era? TJ Walker’s analysis on RT
FOX’s Glenn Beck is about to wrap up his TV show and start a paid web network. Former MSNBC pundit Keith Olbermann has kicked off his new show on Current TV — a network with an average of only 23,000 viewers during primetime. Will more mainstream media stars be jumping the mainstream ship?
