John McCain Tweets That it’s Time for Mubarak to Step Down

John McCain came close to being President of the United States and is well-known around the world, but he is still just a member of the minority party in the Senate.

So I think it’s fine for him to tweet foreign policy positions on Twitter. But Presidents still need a more official way of communicating policy shifts of such magnitude. Don’t expect to see Obama tweeting that North Korea’s dictator should step down anytime soon.

John McCain Suggestion: Stop Standing and Applauding the State of the Union Speeches

Yesterday on Face the Nation,  Senator John McCain made a great point: State of the Union speeches are long and boring because politicians on either side of the aisle feel the need to stand and applaud every two seconds. I agree. Yes, it’s nice for any speaker to get crowd reaction, but it does become quite tedious when a president can’t get through a sentence without having to wait 2 minutes for everyone to sit down and quite themselves. This is why State of the Union addresses that can be read out loud in 15 minutes actually takes an hour and 15 minutes to deliver to Congress. More at Mediaite.com

Prediction: The Better Speaker Will be President–That Means President Obama.

John McCain can be a great speaker, especially when he is a little bit angry and speaking without notes. The problem is that he consistently (at least 50% of the time) is boring, mundane and flat, due to poor reading of a speech. Barack Obama is occasionally flat and has too many “uhs” and “ums” (especially during a media interview), but Obama is consistently (over 80% of the time) a great speaker. He’s smooth, fluid, emotional, and compelling.

My prediction: This spells doom for McCain. Since the modern TV era (1952), the general election candidate who is the better speaker has always won the presidency. (I grant you 2000 and 2004 can be debated due to the poor speaking skills of Bush versus the irritating speaking styles of Gore and Kerry).

Judging the Public speaking authenticity of the major presidential Candidates

Honestly folks, I’m really not judging politics here. I am simply attempting to look at how the authenticity levels of candidates are affecting their public speaking effectiveness. Here’s how I rate the top remaining candidates.

1-10 scale

So how did the candidates do in the victory and consolation speeches?

Mitt Romney—I thought he seemed down, depressed, and as if his whole world were caving in. Other pundits thought it was his best speech of the campaign—candid, genuine and personal.

Mike Huckabee—He was his usual Huckabee, i.e., funny, personal, emotional, and empathetic. Huckabee is Rush Limbaugh, Ronald Reagan, James Carville and Gomer Pyle combined. He looked and sounded like a winner.

Debate–More immigration

Giuliani defending his immigration policies. He seems reasonable and rational here.

Thompson continues to stammer.

Huckabee on immigration strikes a balance of seeming tough and compassionate. Fascinating spin by saying immigrants should be able to hold their heads high–nice twist.

Paul. Sounds rational and intelligent on immigration.

Debate on principles

Huckabee talking about core principles–very thoughtful–not glib–appears statesman-like.

Thompson-Thompson needs more makeup to cover the bags under his eyes. Thompson stammers a lot–he’s really not very articulate.

debate analysis 1st q

Gibson is friendly and good natured.

Huckabee is wearing a bad TV tie–it is pixilating and going blurry in some shots. His first answer comes across sincere–nice distancing from Bush. He appears to be thoughtful re foreign policy.

Fred Thompson says “uh” evey two seconds. He seems to need a director and severl takes before he can nail it.
