CNN to Host GOP Primary Debate Next June

For political and debate junkies like me, this is an early Christmas present! I love debates! It easy to dismiss early debates like this as meaningless and superficial, only they are not.
As I look back on my notes from the first GOP Presidential debate in 2007, I see that I have the highest marks to Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee. True, neither beat John McCain, but both Romney and Huckabee came the closet to beating McCain and both are at the top of the polls now. Coincidence? I think not. Being a great communicator is still critical to being a successful leader, George W. Bush notwithstanding.

I have to confess, I think this is the funniest thing ever! I’d love to see a serious political talk/debate show end in a fight like this every night. A lot of men will agree with me on this. No women will like this. You’ve got to watch for yourself.
Christopher Hitchens and Tony Blair debate Whether God Exists – and Hitchens wins the debate: No God

Congratulations to Christopher Hitchens for beating Tony Blair last week in Toronto in a debate on whether God Exists. And congrats to the organizer of the debates—it was a sellout crowd AND the story got massive worldwide coverage. Regardless of your position on the existence of a supernatural being, this is good news for those of us who love and care about public speaking and debate.
I’ve often fantasized about a competitive public speaking/debating professional circuit; compete with international rankings and tournaments. I know a lot more kids who were into high school and college debate than were into high school or college hockey or bowling and yet there’s no professional level debate whereas there is for bowling. Bowling! It’s not fair.

You’ve got to watch this. That’s one way to make your point in a debate! As much fun as it might be to see Nancy Pelosi do this to John Boehner next January, something tells me we won’t be seeing this on C-SPAN anytime soon.
The NY Gubernatorial Freak Show, Er, Debate – public speaking

The NY gubernatorial debate last night was a circus, and not the full-scale, classy Ringling Brothers affair. Instead it was a sleazy, small-time affair filled with characters you hope are on the next rain out of town. The organizers of the debate blundered by inviting seven separate candidates, including a former prostitute’s madam and a guy who wears gloves. What the organizers should have done was impose a litmus test of, say, 5% support in the polls, for each candidate, in order to be included in the debate. That would have narrowed it down to just the Republican Carl Paladino and the Democrat Andrew Cuomo. Then, at least both plausible candidates could have debated or at least had a longer airing of their views.
Contrarians will point out that presidential primary debates will often have as many as a dozen candidates on a stage. But that’s different, because quite often there is no clear front-runner, it’s just for a party nomination, and you have numerous people with lifelong experiences in government. And even in presidential primary debates, there are often a hundred or more candidates who were left off the podium because they were considered too unsubstantial.
President Obama Jousts with House Republicans on Friday

President Obama took questions directly from House Republicans last Friday. It was fascinating theater for all who watched it because it wasn’t scripted, thereby making it unpredictable and because he was in front of a hostile audience, making int inherently more interesting. Obama won big poits for courage and Republicans got more airtime too. All involved won. It continues to be a surprise to me that politicans in the US don’t seek this out more, as they do in England and Europe.
