Chris Brown Apologizes for Using Anti-Gay Slurs In Social Media
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Communications, Media, Media Training, public relations, reputation management on December 31, 2010
We are in the tail end of a zeitgeist change where using gay slurs has gone from acceptable and normal to unacceptable and taboo. Entertainers who use anti-gay slurs now face the wrath of Perez Hilton and many other outwardly Pro-Gay media outlets that didn’t exist, 20, 10 or even 5 years ago. We are now a matter of months, not years, from the point where using a gay slur will be seen as no different from using the “N” word, and with all the career ending baggage that entails.
The Next Big Media Form After The Newspaper will Be…Nothing
Posted by TJ Walker in blogging, Communications, Media, News, publishing on December 31, 2010
Nothing in the sense of a distinct new format like an iPad ap. Instead, the focus is on content, audio video or text. People in the media business, myself included, have to focus on creating compelling content that people want, not on finding a new container.
Henry Kissinger Plays Damage Control – Two Weeks Later
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, Media Training, public relations, reputation management on December 26, 2010
Henry Kissinger got in trouble a few weeks ago when tapes surfaced. He is heard on the 1973 tapes saying, “The emigration of Jews from the Soviet Union is not an objective of American foreign policy. And if they put Jews into gas chambers in the Soviet Union, it is not an American concern. Maybe a humanitarian concern.”
Yikes!
Sound Bite of the Day – Joe Biden Says Gay Marriage Is “Inevitable”
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Government & Politics, media relations, Media Training, public relations, reputation management on December 26, 2010
Joe Biden’s quote that gay marriage is “inevitable” found its way into ever news organization in the world. Why? After all, it wasn’t a blunder or blooper.
The word “inevitable” is a good soundbite word becasue 1. It is an absolute. 2. It’s an implied attack on those who feel differently. 3. It’s emotional. 4. It’s short. 5. It’s clarifying. 6. It implies action.

George Lopez Is (Sort of, in 8 years) Planning On Running For Mayor Of Los Angeles
Posted by TJ Walker in Uncategorized on December 22, 2010
I don’t place a lot of stock in what people say their are going to do in eight years, but Lopez may have many of the raw talents needed to be a successful politician. He has high name ID, rich friends, money, and an ability to communicate well through the media. Governor Arnold’s mixed success not withstanding, I expect more and more movie and TV stars to take up politics in the future (especially when they are past their prime and can no longer generate huge Hollywood paydays).
Film Director Jafar Panahi Sentenced to 6 Years in Prison
Posted by TJ Walker in Uncategorized on December 22, 2010
Now THAT’S what I call censorship. It’s important to realize in a world where people cry “censorship” ever two seconds just because some didn’t like or buy their movie or book, that real censorship exists where governments stop artists and journalists from communicating their work.
Karl Rove Trashes White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, media relations, Media Training, Politics, Professional Speakers, public relations, Public Speaking Skills, reputation management on December 20, 2010
This, of course, is nonsense. Robert Gibbs is the best press secretary since Ari Fleisher during the first term of George W. Bush. Gibbs gets under the skin of Rove precisely because he doesn’t speak in the weak and apologetic tones of most so-called liberals in the media. Watch for yourself below.
Winona Ryder claims to have never used the Internet or read a blog
Posted by TJ Walker in blogging, celebrities, Media, public relations, Social Media on December 12, 2010
So is this the path to success? Only if you are already success and have been famous for more than 15 years, as in the case of Ryder.
While it’s certainly true that a lot of people waste a great deal of time on the internet and through social media trying to advance their careers without much to show for it, Winona’s method isn’t the answer either. If you think you can just sit back and read books, attend parties or shoplift your time away and be successful like Ryder, think again. Ryder has been able to leverage her A-level fame to get other people to talk about her and promote her on the Internet every minute of the day.
Time Magazine Exclusive interview with Sarah Palin…or was it?
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Government & Politics, Media, News on December 11, 2010

Time has a cover story on Sarah Palin, which normally implies hours and hours together in person with a subject. Or at least a few hours by phone. It turns out, this whole interview was done by email between a time reporter and Palin, or at least the reporter thinks it might have been Palin, but then it could have been Willow or Trig. I pity the poor news weekly trying to remain relevant in today’s 24/7 digital environment. Now candidates aren’t even willing to return their phone calls. With US News and Newsweek getting sucked up into a black hole (definitely not black ink!) can Time be far behind?

Former Democratic Senator Mike Gravel considering running against Obama?
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Government & Politics, Media Training, Politics on December 11, 2010
Should Obama be worried? Does Gravel have the ability to communicate on behalf of disaffected Democrats and liberals? No. Gravel ran in 2008 and did nothing but strike people as a goof-ball. He even suggests he thinks the government might have somehow been involved with 9/11. Obama may have a serious democratic challenger in 2012, but Gravel doesn’t have the gravitas or the political skills to communicate the case against Obama. More at Mediate.
Gravel dies star in the funniest political ad ever. check this out.

Indian Political Talk show ends in Fight – CNN is this your Answer?
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, Debate Central, Media, News on December 7, 2010
I have to confess, I think this is the funniest thing ever! I’d love to see a serious political talk/debate show end in a fight like this every night. A lot of men will agree with me on this. No women will like this. You’ve got to watch for yourself.

State Department says new WikiLeaks document dump would risk lives
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, Media on November 28, 2010
2 big lessons here:
1. This is one reason why a lot of normal, rational people hate anyone who has anything to do with the news media. Possibly getting people killed for a scoop is despicable whether you are Wikileaks or a media organization that eventually publishes it.
2. Being someone who works in government just got a lot harder because you constantly have to assume that anything you ever type will be seen by the whole world, hence, a lot of great intelligence that could make the world safer may be lost because it can never be communicated via text.
The McDonalds’s McRib, Why Scarcity is the ultimate Sales Pitch

Vatican creates mass confusion over Pope’s condom comments
Posted by TJ Walker in Media Training, News, Politics, public relations, reputation management on November 22, 2010
The Pope and his handlers are flip flopping about like a freshman congressman who suddenly realized that it’s OK to be against big government but you’d better be in favor of funding social security and Medicare. More at the Times.
