Give ABC’s Jonathan Karl some credit. The guy’s creative–and willing to risk the snarky ridicule of those media websites. In an effort to explain the federal budget, Karl got his hands on $100 in pennies, and then proceded to cover a conference room table with them–all divided up according to the spending in the president’s budget.

Public speaking moment of the day: LeBron James confronts his heckler in Detroit
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Best Speaker of the Day, Body Language, celebrities, CEOs/Financial, Crisis Communications, Public Speaking Skills, tip of the day, Training Community on February 14, 2011

by Mike Bako -At this point in his career Lebron James has heard it all from opposing fans. The boos, the cheers, the cursing and through it all he has continuously preformed at a high level. At times it almost seemed like he used it as fuel to reach even greater heights.
So why did he decide to verbally confront a fan in Detroit over heckling that he was receiving? It certainly was not the first time he had heard it from the Detroit crowd. What was different this time was that his small children were nearby and he did not want them hearing the curses coming out of the fans mouth.

French President Nicholas Sarkozy Speaks Out Against Multiculturalism
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Best Speaker of the Day, blogging, Body Language, Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics on February 11, 2011

Sarkozy joins leaders from Britain, Germany and Spain who have all spoken out against multiculturalism. Sarkozy also proclaims that multiculturalism has been a “failure.”
How will liberal democracies continue to assimilate immigrants? The key word is assimilate, in the eyes of these leaders. This battle is going to continue to brew and we are going to see more and more speeches on this topic in the months and years to come.

ABC’s Martin Bashir asks polite and fair questions to this Scientology stooge. That’s why he stormed out of the interview. If you aren’t willing to answer basic questions about your business/religion/cult, you shouldn’t consent to interviews in the first place.

Keith Olbermann Will Return to the airwaves in 2011 – Prediction
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Media, News, reputation management on January 22, 2011
Keith Olbermann is one prickly pear. He’s quit other networks many times. He’s even quit MSNBC before. Creative people with strongly held opinions are often difficult to work with and that’s the rap on Olbermann as well.
But is doesn’t matter because Olbermann has talent. It’s actually a rare talent for someone to talk every night on TV and attract a large audience. Olbermann has it. That’s why I predict he will be back on the airwaves–in 2011. Maybe even on MSNBC.
How Washington Information Brokers Ply Their Trade
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Government & Politics, Politics on January 18, 2011
The New York Times chronicles the lives of young Washington staffers who get up at 4:00 AM to gather and process news for their more influential bosses. Apparently, no one in DC has ever heard of an RSS feed. I don’t like people who just reflexively bash Washington and bureaucrats (disclosure, I used to live there and I did work on Capitol Hill for members of congress), but in this case, DC does seem to be behind the times.

New Version of Twain’s Huckleberry Finn Won’t Have N-Word
Posted by TJ Walker in Authors Corner, Communications, Media on January 4, 2011
What! This seems insane. Or at least like something the producers of Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly shows would cook up on a slow news day, now that they can’t complain about the phony, non-existent war on Christmas anymore. The idea of banning older books and words because values have evolved takes us down a slippery slope. The publisher of the new Huck Finn are going to substitute the N-word with “salve.” But isn’t slavery an abomination? Why not protect young ears from slavery? Why not change the word phrase to “person with power and wealth deficiencies?” That should make for elegant and exciting reading.
