Rangel’s Future Obituary: Charlie Rangel, Censured Congressman

Rangel did not play his cards right. He might have gotten a raw deal compared to other House charlatans over the last 40 years. But Gingrich, Delay, Livingston and others had the good sense to quit before they were 80 and they went home (even if home was Washington) before they could be convicted. Charlie stayed way, way too long. If Rangel were 40, he could work to rehabilitate his reputation and image, but at 80, can he do much more than sulk and cast stones? More at the New York Times.
Charley Rangel’s Censure, what does it mean from a political communication perspective?

I’ve worked around enough politicians over the last three decades to become a big believer in term limits. It’s only human nature after awhile to lose your zeal for reform and gain zeal for getting more comfortable and richer. So is it a shame that Charlie Rangel, at age 80 and after fifty years of various public office is practically run out of office? No.
Rangel strikes me as similar to most longtime politicians of either party: they spend all day long surrounded by rich lobbyists and even richer CEOs and the politicians start to feel sorry for themselves and convince themselves they deserve a richer lifestyle too.

Short takes – sound bites from TJ
Kanye West has been invited back to the MTV Video Music Awards show. Prediction: he won’t be grabbing the mic from Taylor Swift or anyone else this year. In fact, there may be a few sketches where other people grab the mic out of his had repeatedly. It will help his image if he went along with the skit good-naturedly.
Rand Paul finally denied the charges that he kidnapped a woman while he was in college. He went 24 hours before making the denial—a major strategic blunder. Worse, his apology seemed weasily because he conflated the charges that he had been abducted by aliens with the charges that he had kidnapped a woman and said that “they” were untrue. This was either a sloppy apology or he really isn’t denying the kidnapping charges. Expect this issue to get further play in the campaign.
