The Secrets to Bill Clinton’s Eye Contact Magic

It doesn’t matter what you think of his politics. Bill Clinton is the most powerful communicator in the world today. Read this story and watch these videos at Four Hour Workweek to find out why.
Did Bill Clinton Ban Tweeting during his Speech? No, it turns out.

Bill Clinton was giving a speech at Salesforce.com this week. His representatives requested that there be no press allowed into the event. The organizers of the even interpreted this to mean no media at all, i.e. social media and thus told people no Tweeting. This, of course, raised a stir.
Why would someone like a Bill Clinton request that no reporters be allowed to an event where he is speaking? After all, don’t most celebrities want more press? Is it because he will be divulging state secrets? Doubtful.
George Bush’s book sells almost as well as Bill Clinton’s in first week

Hats off to George bush and his PR team, they implemented a masterful multi-week PR blitz using every form of media to promote the launch of Bush’s new memoirs and it sold more than 700,000 copies in the first week according to the publisher. That is remarkable given that I can’t imagine the book would be that interesting, plus advance reviews revealed that Bush cribbed entire sections of his book from the books of his own advisors.
Bill Clinton to have Cameo role in The Hangover 2?
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Crisis Communications, media relations, public relations, reputation management on November 15, 2010
Those are the reports. There was a time, say 8 years ago or so, when this would have been seen as risky for him. It would bring up too many memories of why people didn’t like Bill Clinton. But Clinton’s reputation is solidified these days in the world community. He’s seen as a tireless advocate for great world causes including, starvation, peace, and victims of disaster. Outside of Rush Limbaugh ditto-heads, it’s rare to find any thoughtful person who doesn’t believe Bill Clinton isn’t an exemplary ex-President. If he wants to joke around and have a little fun on the set of Hangover 2, it’s not exactly as though he’s frittering his life or his potential away. Have fun Mr. President! More at TMZ.
Worst public speaking invention of the last 20 years – the Thumb Smash
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Body Language, celebrities, Presentation Skills Training, Public Speaking Skills on November 2, 2010
I think the Bill Clinton is one of the two top public speakers in the world today (the other being Tony Blair), but he picked up this odd way of smashing his thumb on top of his giners when making a strong point. Bill, stop doing this! It looks phony and unnatural. I’ve never seen anyone in real life making this gesture unless they were holding a remote control. I’m told he does this because some consultant told him people would be offended if he were seen pointing a finger. This is nonsense. Audiences relate to speakers who move their hands and bodies in completely natural ways.
Don’t I look stupid here with the Clinton-invisible-remote-control-thumb smash pose?
Clinton Asked Democrat to Quit Florida Senate Race
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Communications, Crisis Communications, Debate Central, Government & Politics, Politics on October 29, 2010
Bill Clinton is sticking his neck out in the neck and neck Florida senate race. Clinton has gone to bat trying to persuade Florida Democratic Rep. Kendrick Meek to drop out of his U.S. Senate race and support Gov. Charlie Crist’s independent candidacy in hopes of thwarting a victory by Republican Marco Rubio.
This is a great move by Clinton showing him as a passionate defender of the party as well as a smart and wise counselor who will do anything in his power not to lose the congress.
Bill Clinton hits the Campaign trail with a Vengeance

There is no better campaigner or campaign speaker on the planet today than Bill Clinton. He’s telling ABC News that Democrats should NOT be written off yet, and that 2010 feels a lot like 1994 to him. I don’t believe him on the first point, but do on the 2nd. The congress changed hands from Democrats to Republicans in 94 and it sure looks like that will happen this time too. Clinton is an example of the limits of speaking and charisma. No matter how hard he rallies the troops, sometimes you can’t go against a titanic shift in the ocean of public opinion. Bill Clinton is still the best campaigner in the world and will continue to be a powerful asset for Democratic candidate and causes for as long as he is alive. But don’t count on him having much impact this year. More here.

Why is Bill Clinton a Great Public Speaker?
Posted by TJ Walker in Debate Central, Great Lectures, Keynote Speaking, Politics, PowerPoint, Professional Speakers, Public Speaking Skills on January 27, 2008
I’m not weighing in on the politics of the day regarding Bill Clinton’s involvement with his wife’s presidential campaign. However, I am interested in his thought process regarding public speaking. I take as a given that no serious person doubts Bill Clinton’s prowess as a public speaker.
In today’s New York Times, we get a glimpse of exactly why:
The Camera Is Always On, Even when You Aren’t the Public Speaker

I feel for former President Bill Clinton. He is, by all accounts, an indefatigable campaigner, often getting by with less than four hours sleep. Well, apparently even Clinton gets tired. Below is a video clip of Clinton snoozing and attempting in vain to stay awake while on the stage behind a speaker. My cheap easy advice is for everyone to get at least 8 hours of sleep, not only on days when you are speaking, but also when you are going to be near any0one else who is speaking and might have a video camera pointed at him or her. If you need motivation to get a good night’s sleep, then you need to watch this.

Don’t Let Your Anger Dominate the News
Posted by TJ Walker in Government & Politics, Media Training, Politics, Public Speaking Skills on January 18, 2008
As much as I think Bill Clinton is a master communicator, no one is perfect. Lately, he has been a little too quick to appear angry at reporters. There is a role for anger, but it must be used sparingly and for big issues only, especially if you have the stature of being a former president.
