Grading Obama’s State of the Union Address: Mike Bako on Wall Street Jouranl Radio
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Audio, Politics, Press Room on January 25, 2012

President Obama’s 2012 State of the Union speech could easily have been billed as his rebuttal to the beating he has been taking over the last two months from his would-be Republican challengers on the campaign trail and during their numerous debates.
Obama’s State of The Union speech was his attempt to bring back to the national stage the Obama of 2008 that brimmed with optimism and hope. He showed the nation the side of him that was the campaigner who won so many hearts, minds, and votes by speaking about hope, fairness, and the fact (from his perspective) that he was best suited to meet the challenges that lay ahead of us.

PR Blunder of the Day—Mike Huckabee Says Obama “grew up in Kenya”

Huh? Huckabee isn’t known for saying incredibly stupid things that can easily be proven factually incorrect later. Yesterday, Huckabee had an aide put out a statement that the Huck had “misspoken” and had meant to say Indonesia.
Hmmm…is this just an attempt to court the birther vote?
President Obama’s Speech on Libya Described as “Wimpy”
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Best Speaker of the Day, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics on February 24, 2011
Liberal and conservative commentators alike have described Obama’s speech as weak and wimpy. However, the Obama Administration claims that they had to tone things down for fear of endangering the lives of Americans still trapped inside Libya.
Speaking tip: When analyzing a speaker, you have to take into consideration more than just the power of the rhetoric; you have to look at all the implications of their words on various constituencies. Sometimes, the speaker is focused on an audience of just one. This is why, frankly, most speeches by diplomats are deadly dull.

President Obama’s Speech on Mubarak
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Body Language, Government & Politics, Politics on February 12, 2011

Obama was at his best when giving the speech in reaction to Mubarak stepping down. Obama struck just the right tone when it came to poetry and prose, celebrating for the Egyptian people and yet displaying cautious optimism.
In politics, sometimes you get unlucky breaks, like walking into office with massive deficits, unemployment and a contracting economy. And sometimes you get lucky breaks, like violence free revolutions turning dictatorships into democracy (at least we hope!).
Obama Speaks Out Against Mubarak

The Obama Administration was clearly not happy with Mubarak’s head fake last night. Team Obama put out a statement criticizing the Egyptian’s failure to communicate clearly on what is happening.
You get the sense that the Obama administration is one straw away from breaking completely with Mubarak and just sending a jet to take him away to Paris.

NY Times Op-Ed by ElBaradei: The Next Step for Egypt’s Opposition
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Government & Politics, Politics on February 11, 2011

Mohamed ElBaradei’s column in Today’s New York Times reveals much about who he is. The fact that at a time when he is, presumably, very busy, he takes the time to reach out to the West in general and the United States in particular, is significant. ElBaradei cares about the international community’s opinion and specifically the United States view toward Egypt. He wants to have good relations with us.
ElBaradei also does a masterful job of oh-so-gently chastising the United States for not being stronger and earlier supporters of the Egyptian opposition and coming out against Mubarak. After a lifetime work in high level diplomatic circles, ElBaradei knows the best way to convince someone to change is to focus on their own self-interest and to cite their own values in defense of that policy. ElBaradei very diplomatically makes the case that the US is spending a fortune trying to create democracy around the world and here is a case where it’s just happenings, so why are we jumping up and down helping them?

One of the interesting things about public speaking is the unpredictability of the audience. You are never 100% certain what you will get.
At first blush, Dickey Cheney speaking to a group of conservatives at a Washington conference should be as friendly as a high school 50-year reunion.

Is Barack Obama coloring his hair?
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, Best Speaker of the Day, blogging, Body Language, CEOs/Financial on January 23, 2011

A number of prominent media outlets in recent days have been asking the question “is Obama coloring his hair to get rid of the grey?” I don’t know, but it’s worth considering that different lighting and different backdrops can make anyone’s hair look substantially lighter or darker.
Media Training Tip: my advice to anyone who is in the media spotlight every day, the way a president or governor is, is do not color your hair. The change is too abrupt and easily noticed and commented on. The hair coloring becomes a story in its own right. Movie stars can get away with it because they are often out of the spotlight for months or even years at a time. However, if you are as disciplined as Ronald Reagan was when he started coloring his hair long before he entered politics and kept it up regularly through the rest of his life, then you can get away with it.

What Will Obama Say in the State of the Union?
Obama will use his bully pulpit to put a focus on his agenda for the next year. Predictions:
1. Obama will stress bi-partisanship and his willingness to work with the new Republican House leadership.
2. The President will continue to talk about the economy and new initiatives for stimulating the economy.
3. Finally, the President will gingerly discuss the Tucson shootings and how our culture most rise above violence

President Obama Gives 491 Speeches, Statements and Remarks in 2010
Posted by TJ Walker in advertising, Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, Authors Corner, Best Speaker of the Day, blogging, Body Language, celebrities, CEOs/Financial, Government & Politics, Speaking Competition on January 3, 2011

People ask me all the time “TJ, what’s the secret to being a great speaker?” part of the answer is simply speaking a lot. The best speakers in the world also tend to peak a lot more than other people do. Obama spoke 491 times last year.
Practice doesn’t make you perfect, but it does make you better than someone who speaks once or twice a year. The only person I can think of who speaks more often that Obama is Bill Clinton.
