The Daily editor to staff: ‘Get out there and start finding more compelling stories’

by Mike Bako- When the websites Huffington Post and the Daily Beast were formed the knock on them was that they were simply aggregating news and not creating original journalism. The editor of Rupert Murdoch’s new, Ipad only, The Daily does not want to get labeled like that. He is urging his reporters to go out and actually find interesting stories. What a novel concept!
This is great lesson for everyone trafficking in the world of new media, blogs and websites. You can only grow your brand so much by simply reposting and taking stories from other outlets. To really make an impression on the marketplace and set yourself apart you need to create your own content and reporting.

Media Training Tip of the Day: If you were interviewed for two hours by a major news weekly or business publication, and your major competitor was quoted, and you were not, guess what, no one at the publication has a vendetta against you or an “in” with your competitor. You weren’t quoted because you didn’t give good quote and your competitor did.

Most people think that the traditional evening news broadcast is a dinosaur and in danger of being extinct. That might be the case, but when major news hits the big three networks are still where people turn to get their news and information.
Major news stories in Egypt and weather here in the US sent ratings for NBC, ABC and CBS soaring to high marks not reached in years.
Media Training Tip: If the subject matter is something you’d rather not talk about, you still need to call reporters back. Otherwise you can be made to look worse and will have no influence on the story.
