Apps are now the favorite cell phone communications tool
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, Technology on March 7, 2011

People with cell phones are now using apps more than they are surfing the web or talking on the phone. This is a good reminder to me to create a public speaking and media training app for the iTunes stores ASAP. If you don’t have an app to demonstrate your expertise or your business’s strengths, what are you waiting for?
Reuters Report: Mobile Phone Etiquette Getting Worse Not Better
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Communications, Technology on February 28, 2011
I love my cell phone as much or more than most people, but I like to think I have some self control.
But I too am noticing a further erosion of common decency when it comes to cell phone usage. I was at an off-Broadway show earlier this week and was sitting in the front row. My friend was also on the front row and playing on his cell phone just a few feet away from the performer. I was finally so annoyed that I grabbed the phone out of my friends pocket and hid it for the rest of the show. Full story here.

Kara Swisher reports the iPad 2 is coming out in March

The new iPad will reportedly have a front-facing video camera—that alone may force me to buy one. I make it a habit not to buy the first version of anything Apple puts out.
I still feel burned from buying the iPhone the first week it came out. Let’s face it, it was a horrible phone and was impossible to type or send text messages with it. I waited until the latest iPhone came out last year and have been quite happy with it. Let’s hope I don’t have to wait 3.5 years for a good iPad.
MEDIA TRAINING TIP: “I don’t know, but I will find out and get back to you before deadline” is an infinitely better thing to say to a reporter than making up facts that doesn’t turn out to be true.

Communications thought of the day: Every new communication technology completely changes how we communicate with friends and strangers, whether we realize it or not. What was science fiction a few decades, becomes cool, then becomes, obvious, then becomes so woven into lives it is not even noticed anymore.

Chobani is now undertaking a major ad campaign where they focus on their actual users in billboard and TV ads. Here’s what a spokesperson told the New York Times:
“We did not want a ‘corporate-out’ campaign,” he added. “We wanted a ‘consumer-up’ campaign, to tap into and extend the ‘Chobani love’ that is rapidly spreading across the country.”
Former Sen. Rick Santorum Has a Google Problem
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, Authors Corner, Best Speaker of the Day, blogging, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, Technology on February 17, 2011

The enemies of Sen. Rick Santorum have created a “Google bomb” so that when you Google the former Senator’s name, you come up with numerous sites that refer to him as the name of a homosexual sex act. A while back, Santorum offended a few folks by equating homosexuality with bestiality and other less savory activities and the homosexual community, led by sex columnist Dan Savage, stuck back.
But now Santorum is running for President and most voters in places like Iowa and New Hampshire have no idea who he is. So it might be nice for the Santorum campaign if people found web sites that were more, er, official.

MEDIA TRAINING TIP OF THE DAY: When getting ready for an in studio radio or TV interview, a producer will often ask you to count to ten for a microphone volume check. Instead say “hi, I’m (your name) and I listen/watch (name of program) every chance I get.” First, the whole staff will appreciate your enthusiasm. Second, they might use what you just said as a promo for years to come giving you a publicity windfall.
