New Gates Study: Students Can Accurately Rate Their Teachers’ Effectiveness

A new study out shows that students who rate their teachers as effective actually make greater measurable improvements over the school year. It turns out that students really are the best judge of speakers. Boring, ineffectual teachers are not liked by students and therefore little learning takes place. But this goes far beyond the classroom and into the work world too. Most business people don’t “like” executives for simply being funny or glib speakers, they like them because they actually say and do helpful, useful things. Being an effective speaker isn’t an “extra” when it comes to being an effective teacher or business leader; it is essential to the whole cause.

Fox Names Most Despised Stars of 2010

Most of the names on the list are predictable: Mel Gibson, Heidi Montag, and all of the Kardashians. Prediction, the negatives surrounding many of these celebrities will destroy their careers and they will become rightfully obscure within a few years. Others, like Tiger Woods and Lebron James, will be able to rehabilitate their images by focusing on the unique talents that gained them fame in the first place. To see the full list, go to FoxNews.

Public Speaking blunder of the Day: KSU instructor arrested for allegedly exposing self in class

I’ve seen some odd ways for speakers to captivate the attention of an audience, but this takes the cake. This teacher took his clothes off in front of the class, and no, it wasn’t a modern art class—it was an accounting class! Something tells me the tenure committee won’t be impressed. Cornell Professor Chastises students for yawning

You’ve got to watch this professor at mediaite. He is my hero! Those of us who speak in front of audiences on a regular basis get tired of rude behavior from people. However, I fault him for being this emotional (again, you need to watch the clip).

It is unlikely that he will ever do or say anything in his career again that will get him this much attention. Also, Mr. Professor, maybe your lectures are a little boring. Perhaps you should walk around the classroom more often and call on people with surprise questions—that will keep them more alert.
