Speak and Be Heard: TJ Walker in WorkingWomen.com

Whether it’s your first team meeting, a big presentation or just introducing yourself at a networking event, learning how to speak with confidence can be a daunting task. Here are tips from TJ Walker, who can help you put your best self forward.

Learn to Like Your Voice: Most people hate the sound of their voice because they’ve heard it on tape, voicemail or video. For most of us, our voices aren’t horrible or wrong, we’re just used to hearing it through our own skulls and it sounds different. The rule is simple: don’t worry about trying to alter your voice; just get over it. It’s much more important to sound compassionate and engaging.

Presentation Training Tip: If you get invited to give a speech, then speak. If you get invited to a reading, then read. (However, great authors don’t read at their own book readings, they tell stories instead.)

Piers Morgan Conducts Worst Interview Ever

Last night I caught Piers Morgan on CNN. He was interviewing Michael Oher, the guy who was the central character in the Sandra Bullock movie, The Blind Side. I hate to be mean, but the interview was an embarrassment for all involved.

Oher said two “uhs” and three “ya knows” for every single other word that came out of his mouth. It was painful and horrific. Look, not everyone has to be great at everything.

Pat Buchanan Slams Gays Better than any Other Conservative Pundit!

I love Pat Buchanan. There I said it. He’s consistently the most honest, most intellectually forceful, and occasionally, the funniest conservative pundit in the business. (I don’t actually share his views on anything, but that is irrelevant and beside the point) Here is a sample of his rhetoric from the McLaughlin Group this past weekend:

“You are trying to impose the values of Fire Island on Parris Island. These are 19-year-old Marines, they’re very macho guys. Many of them are Christian traditionalists and you’ve got these secular values and you bring open homosexuals into the barracks with these guys, it’ll be hellish. One Marine commandant said very simply, ‘Would moving homosexuals into the barracks with my Marines enhance the fighting effectiveness, the cohesion and morale of our Marine units? I don’t believe it would.’ Why change something that is working. The Marine Corps is the finest unit in the world, or one of them, and it works. Why impose outside values on them? . . .”

Snooki Shores Up $11,000 Pay Day To Appear At Tanning Salon

The next time you laugh at the long lines of contestants waiting to audition for a reality show take a look at this story from TMZ. Snooki from MTV’s Jersey Shore is cashing in on her reality fame at the tune of $11,000 a day for an appearance at a tanning salon.

This speaks to the larger issue of fame and why so many people chase it on reality tv shows. If you can gain notoriety or infamy you can use it as a personal checkbook for many years after your show or appearance has gone off the air.

Arizona Quarterback Flips Out On Reporter During Post-Game Press Conference

by Mike Bako
Video does not lie and what it told us about Arizona Cardinals quarterback Derek Anderson was that he was laughing on the sidelines of an embarrassing 27-6 loss to the San Fransisco 49ers last night. Why then did Anderson get so upset when reporters questioned him about it after the game? Getting so upset that he stormed off from the press conference.
Here’s the reality. Anderson was laughing during the game, so he was lying after it. Getting pissed and talking loudly and walking off doesn’t change that fact.

What’s more persuasive, Fast talkers or Slow talkers

I’ve always taught people to speaker slower in order to come across more understandable and persuasive, but new research suggests that’s not the case. It turns out, it depends on whether people already agree or disagree with you what is more persuasive. The results are surprising. Read more at PsyBlog.

Ted Sorenson is dead at 82 – Kennedy speech writer will long be remembered

Ted Sorenson passed away today. He was the gentleman speech writer who never fully took credit for all the great lines he wrote for John F. Kennedy. When I last chatted with him after an Al Gore speech earlier in the decade, he was magnanimous, as always, even saying he thought Gore was a great speaker, in the southern style of preachers. More at CBS.
