Hugh Hefner Announces Engagement on Twitter and Continues to be Relevant
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Media, reputation management, Social Speaking on December 27, 2010
Regardless of what you think of Hugh Hefner’s subject matter, the 84 year old mogul continues to be the master of all media. True, if you are an investor in playboy, you haven’t done well in recent years.
Still, The Hef is constantly reinventing himself and embracing not only young women, but all forms of new media. Hefner (or someone who can read a keyboard) is an active Twitterer. Hef still has shows on basic cable and content on every single old and new media outlet. I don’t know how long Hef will live, but he’s now entering his 7th decade of captivating the public and living in the public eye.

Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson comments about playing on Christmas and how Christian holidays don’t mean anything to the NBA need to be looked at through the prism of the source. Jackson is someone who is known for his measured comments and rarely ever says anything that is not premeditated.
These comments are not an off the cuff remark by a player who is complaining about having to “work” on Christmas. They are being made by the most respect coach in the sport, the son of a minister and by someone who is a thoughtful thinker with many interests away from the basketball court.

The next time you laugh at the long lines of contestants waiting to audition for a reality show take a look at this story from TMZ. Snooki from MTV’s Jersey Shore is cashing in on her reality fame at the tune of $11,000 a day for an appearance at a tanning salon.
This speaks to the larger issue of fame and why so many people chase it on reality tv shows. If you can gain notoriety or infamy you can use it as a personal checkbook for many years after your show or appearance has gone off the air.

Twitter now valued at $3.7 Billion

And yet it makes less than $100 million. Is this rational? Time will tell. For the moment, being the industry leader in short-burst world wide communication seems like a winner.
It’s as if someone invested TV and had a monopoly with 90% of the world audience. How Twitter is going to make big money in the future? To be determined???

Video does not lie and what it told us about Arizona Cardinals quarterback Derek Anderson was that he was laughing on the sidelines of an embarrassing 27-6 loss to the San Fransisco 49ers last night. Why then did Anderson get so upset when reporters questioned him about it after the game? Getting so upset that he stormed off from the press conference.
Here’s the reality. Anderson was laughing during the game, so he was lying after it. Getting pissed and talking loudly and walking off doesn’t change that fact.
Martin Scorsese’s “Public Speaking” – a Review

I caught the new Scorsese documentary on Fran Lebowitz when it premiered last week on HBO. While I don’t think this will spawn the next “Sex in the City” franchise for HBO, I personally loved the film. If you have an interest in the life of the public intellectual, the role of the speaker on college campuses and a the history of commentary going back to the infamous Gore Vidal/William F. Buckley (Queer) debate, then you will find this film as fascinating as I did. More at HBO.
What to do if you don’t want to Tawk like a Noo Yawker

Great article in The New York Times today on the field of accent reduction and change. It also gives a nice plug to accent specialist Sam Chwat (I’ve attended his workshops and bought this CDs as research for my own clients).
Big question: How much of a problem is having a regional accent these days? In my opinion, not much. It a lot more important to have something interesting to say. Rosie O’Donnell has a strong New York accent; didn’t seem to hurt her career much. Dan Rather has a Texas accent; he had a good run. And then there’s Governor Arnold…

So the Queen of England is now on Facebook – so what?
Posted by TJ Walker in blogging, Communications, Media, public relations, Social Speaking on November 8, 2010
There was a time when a major organization launching a Facebook page was big news, somewhere around 2007. It’s kind of like 1995 when companies could get press for starting a website. But at some point, it no longer because news when a company started a web site, it was news if came out that a company DIDN’T have a website. I think that’s where we are now with Facebook; it’s news if a major organization doesn’t have a Facebook page. Somehow the queen was able to get a positive PR spin on this during the last few days, but I predict she will be the last one.
Sarah Palin in Twitter “Racist Tweet” controversy?
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Communications, Social Speaking on November 5, 2010
Sarah Palin, who seems to be the only thing anyone can talk about these days, was in the center of a mini-controversy earlier today when it looked like she had Favorited a nasty tweet from Ann Coulter (I realize the “nasty” part probably could have gone without saying, since it was from Ann Coulter). This episode does show the perils of politicians having a huge social media presence, especially if it is run by a lower level staffer. However, I give Palin very high marks for her quick email response to ABC’s Jake Tapper, thus diffusing the whole scanal quickly and painlessly. Read the full story at the Washington Post.

Part of being a compelling political spokesperson is that you must have not only the right message, but be perceived as the right messenger. Who you are counts for as much as what you say. Many on the right are now looking for their next generation of leaders and are most impressed with Senator-Elect Marco Rubio of Florida.
