How to Create A Branded Presence For Your Products and Services in the Media: Inside Communications with Mike Bako
Posted by TJ Walker in advertising, Analysis, News, public relations, Social Media, Video on February 16, 2012
Peter Himler sat down with host Mike Bako to share all things PR including how the new communications landscape has not changed his clients’ overriding goal: to create a positive, branded presence for their products, services and POVs in the media. What has changed are the means to this end, which now encompasses not just earned media coverage, but paid, owned and ultimately shared.
Like most PR professionals, Mr. Himler stays on top of new media developments, but says that many clients continue to measure (and pay) agencies by traditional media results. Hewlett-Packard recently performed a study on tweets and discovered that most of the conversations were influenced by traditional media. With saying this, securing a story in a traditional media source is becoming more and more challenging. It’s no secret that capturing the attention of a top tier journalist has grown increasingly more difficult. since they are inundated with hundreds of email pitches a day. Postscript to Network Solutions Fiasco
Posted by TJ Walker in Crisis Communications, Social Media on June 22, 2011
As of 7:30 PM, our PitchingWell.com website hosted on Network Solutions was finally up and running again. See the two previous blog mentions to get the history on this problem.
On the one hand, I’m glad Network solutions finally got our site back. But on the other hand, I still think it’s reprehensible that a company as big and ostensibly as reputable as Network Solutions performs so dismally during a crisis. The Network Solutions blog still says that everything is OK as of 10:44 AM this morning, a demonstrable falsehood. Yes, I finally got them to take my problem seriously. But not every small business customer can afford to launch a multimedia/social media/video jihad against Network Solutions to get their attention as I did. I have delivered a full onslaught of videos, Tweets, and blog posts denouncing Network Solutions for their deceptive practices, and still, they refuse to make a mention of any problems on their blog today or on their Facebook page or any or social media channel.

Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, blogging, celebrities, Communications, media relations, Social Media, Video on March 3, 2011
Charlie Sheen recently broke the Guinness World Record for acquiring the most twitter followers in the fastest amount of time. This seems to be the only positive press the troubled actor is getting these days. E though his bad press has probably lead to the increased twitter followers, it wouldn’t be a bad idea for Charlie Sheen to lay low for a bit.

Deputy Attorney General of Indiana Jeffrey Cox Tweets “I advocate deadly force”

Cox was referring to citizen protesters who opposed legislators and the Governor. Cox deserves a lot of credit for his Mubarak impersonation, but does get the bone-headed social media play of the day award.
Who does understand the power of social media in Indiana? The Attorney General of the state. That office wasted no time in firing Cox. This was a smart move. Otherwise, that office would have been consumed with having to defend Cox’s asinine statement for the next month. Now, the damaging story is contained and the Attorney’s office comes out looking responsible and responsive.

According to Wonkette, Sarah Palin Has Secret Facbook Account ‘Lou Sarah’
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, blogging, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, Social Media on February 23, 2011

This isn’t going to go down as the biggest crime of the century, but politicians need to realize that it’s only getting harder and harder to do sneaky stuff while hiding your identity.
Just like the Congressman who got caught without a shirt the other day because he used his real email address, apparently Sarah Palin used an email address for her ‘Lou Sarah’ Facebook page that was known to political insiders, some of whom are now her enemies.

N.F.L. Labor Dispute Plays Out on Twitter

Why wait for the newspaper and TV reporters to come to you when you can make your own news voicing your opinion on Twitter?
Many NFL players are taking to Twitter and other social media avenues to air their opinions on the ongoing labor discussions. Bypassing the traditional media to get their messages out, unfiltered, is an unprecedented way for players to reach their fans and help shape the discussion.

Chobani is now undertaking a major ad campaign where they focus on their actual users in billboard and TV ads. Here’s what a spokesperson told the New York Times:
“We did not want a ‘corporate-out’ campaign,” he added. “We wanted a ‘consumer-up’ campaign, to tap into and extend the ‘Chobani love’ that is rapidly spreading across the country.”
