NBA Coach Phil Jackson On Christmas Games: “It’s Like Christian Holidays Don’t Mean Anything To Them Anymore.”

Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson comments about playing on Christmas and how Christian holidays don’t mean anything to the NBA need to be looked at through the prism of the source. Jackson is someone who is known for his measured comments and rarely ever says anything that is not premeditated.
These comments are not an off the cuff remark by a player who is complaining about having to “work” on Christmas. They are being made by the most respect coach in the sport, the son of a minister and by someone who is a thoughtful thinker with many interests away from the basketball court.
TV Evangelist being extorted for $7.5 million
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, celebrities, CEOs/Financial, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, Sermons on December 1, 2010

Rev. Marcus Lamb claims he’s being extorted $7.5 million over an affair he had years ago. I kind of feel sorry for the extortionists. Don’t they know that having outside sexual affairs is practically a requirement for a successful TV evangelist who goes on the air to tell other people not to have affairs? Jimmy Swaggart is still everywhere these days. Even Jim Bakker pops up now and then. More at AP.

September 11th, the Demagogues favorite holiday? Lessons in public speaking
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, Media Training, Politics, Sermons on September 12, 2010
Thank goodness another September 11th is past. Let’s face it; September 11th has become a sort of Christmas/New Year’s Eve bash for Demagogues around the US and the globe. I can barely stand to watch TV or follow the news in the week leading up to 9-11 each year. It’s not just the 2-bit “preacher” in Florida who got a billion dollars worth of publicity for (not) burning the Koran this year.
Religious zealots across the spectrum try to capitalize on the spectacle each year. Spouses of so-called “hero-victims” who received $10 million life insurance policies cry about how much more tax payer money they deserve. Firefighter union leaders thousands of miles away from NYC use 9-11 as an excuse to squeeze multi-million dollar pensions from beleaguered city council members of cash-strapped municipalities.
How Do I Set the Tone for a Presentation?
Posted by TJ Walker in Professional Speakers, Public Speaking Skills, Sermons on May 7, 2010
Tone, schmone; there is no such thing as a formal or informal presentation! There is no such thing as a technical presentation or a PowerPoint presentation. There are only two kinds of presentations in the entire world: interesting or boring. So which one is yours going to be?
Should I Outline the Key Points of My Presentation to My Audience?
Posted by TJ Walker in Keynote Speaking, Sermons on April 27, 2010
No—why make it harder on yourself if you forget a point? If you never tell your audience all the points you are going to cover in advance, then they will never know if you left one out. Plus, you will never feel pressure to remember your point number 12 from some complex outline. Sure, there are some world-class speakers like Apple’s Steve Jobs who believe that you should always outline for your audience. However, if your audience isn’t writing down everything you say word for word—and that rarely happens—then outlining your presentation doesn’t help them or you.
My recommendation is for you to just focus on making one point at a time; this is easy for you and your audience. When you finish with one point—by giving examples, telling stories, and the like—then move to the next point. After you have finished covering the handful of most important points you wanted to cover, sit down. You will have given a pretty good presentation. Read the rest of this entry »

James Arthur Ray charged with Manslaughter
Posted by TJ Walker in Crisis Communications, Presentation Skills Training, Professional Speakers, Public Speaking Skills, Sermons, Uncategorized on February 4, 2010
I hope James Arther Ray gets a fair trial on his manslaughter charges, but since I’m not going to be a jury member, I’m free to weigh in. I hope he gets convicted and serves some time in his own “sweat lodge” with no easy escape.
It’s important to remember that history shows us that the greatest leaders who help humanity are usually great speakers. But it’s also important to remember that the worst self-serving tyrants who lead people to their own deaths are usually great speakers too.
Anyone can speak as well as Martin Luther King
Posted by TJ Walker in Keynote Speaking, Politics, Presentation Skills Training, Professional Speakers, Sermons, Social Speaking, Uncategorized on January 15, 2010
The following is an excerpt from my upcoming book “How To Give a Pretty Good Presentation” (Wiley 2010)
A final Word
I respect your decision that it is not your goal to become a world-class professional speaker—it’s OK, really. But I do want to leave you with a story of a young man who was quite similar to you. Many decades ago he was in college and had to take a public speaking class. Public speaking really wasn’t his thing….he didn’t consider himself to be a natural born public speaker. Sure enough, he went through the course in the way you would expect. He slogged through the course and got the grade of “C.” I guess you could say his teacher considered him good enough to give a “pretty good presentation.” The funny thing is this same guy went into a career where he had to speak a lot. And then one day he went to Washington and gave his “I have a Dream Speech” and went down in history as having given the greatest and most influential speech of the 20th Century. So if you think of yourself as only capable of giving a pretty good presentation, then you are in good company; Martin Luther King Jr. was also in the same boat. There’s nothing wrong with giving a pretty good presentation, but you already have all of the innate skills you need to be a great speaker—good luck with all of your future presentation!
The one thing that will truly surprise you about Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Posted by TJ Walker in Fear of Speaking, Politics, PowerPoint, Sermons, Uncategorized on January 15, 2010
Here’s on eI bet you didn’t know. When Marti Luther King Jr was in college, he earned the grade of C in public speaking class. And yet he went on to give a speech that has been ranked the best of the 20th Century. So no, I don’t think speakers are born; they are made thorugh practice, time and effort.

Should I use a teleprompter?
Posted by TJ Walker in Keynote Speaking, Public Speaking Skills, Sermons on April 12, 2008
The following comes from TJ Walker’s upcoming book “The Wisdom of Your Audienceâ€. Consistently, the worst advice speakers and presenters get, comes from everyone who is NOT your audience. The following gives examples of some of the WORST advice people are often given. It is followed by the advice of your audience. Listen to them. They are your true judge and jury.

The Camera Is Always On, Even when You Aren’t the Public Speaker

I feel for former President Bill Clinton. He is, by all accounts, an indefatigable campaigner, often getting by with less than four hours sleep. Well, apparently even Clinton gets tired. Below is a video clip of Clinton snoozing and attempting in vain to stay awake while on the stage behind a speaker. My cheap easy advice is for everyone to get at least 8 hours of sleep, not only on days when you are speaking, but also when you are going to be near any0one else who is speaking and might have a video camera pointed at him or her. If you need motivation to get a good night’s sleep, then you need to watch this.
