Hollywood unleashes a new blockbuster about…a speech coach?
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Government & Politics, Media, Meeting Planners, Public Speaking Skills on November 28, 2010
As a speech coach, I’m quite excited that Hollywood is giving us our due treatment. The King’s Speech is a new film out that shows how one speech coach helped a king overcome his stuttering problems. I admit, that sounds like a horrible movie premise. But the movie is, by all accounts, fantastic. It has a Metacritic rating of 82, meaning it has near universal praise among serious film critics. I plan on going to see it this week. Please post your own review here if you’ve seen it.
Should i rehearse, and for how long?

What Lebron James did not learn from Tony Hayward

I guess Lebron James was too busy deciding which mansion to buy in Miami to have paid much attention to the news over the last few months. If he had, he would have seen the steady stream of bad sound bites coming from the mouth of former BP CEO Tony Hayward and he would have known not to say something so inflammatory as “We hated Cleveland…” in the September issue of GQ magazine.
By now we all remember that Hayward wanted the oil spill to end because he “wanted his life back”. He was vilified for being callous and selfish in the face of so much devastation. That quote was played over and over again on TV and radio to the point that no one remembers the first part of his statement was “We’re sorry for the massive disruption it’s caused their lives. There’s no one who wants this over more than I do.” It is a prime example of someone who could not stay on message, got himself in trouble for it and provided more reasons for his critics to be angry with him.

How to Give a Pretty Good Presentation
Introduction
Shortly after my book “TJ Walker’s Secret to Foolproof Presentations” went to #1 on the USA Today Bestseller list, I received a call from an editor. “Hey TJ, congrats on the book, but what about all the people who don’t want to give a “Foolproof Presentation?”
I said “What?”

Are You Blocking Your Presentation Screen from Any Angle?
Posted by TJ Walker in Audio/Video Technology, Meeting Planners, PowerPoint, Presentation Skills Training, Public Speaking Skills on February 1, 2008
I was at a tech conference yesterday that had its presenters up on a stage with the screen for presentations directly behind them. Big problem? The seated presenters heads were obscuring the view of the bottom 25% of the screen. If you are a conference organizer, you should look at a room as it will actually be used. This means you should sit in the audience and have someone sit in the cahir where the panelist is and see if anythign is obscured. This will solve the problem.
