Is it Fair to Quote Mitt Romney on “Firing?”
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Best Speaker of the Day, CEOs/Financial, Communications, Crisis Communications, Debate Central, Government & Politics, Media, Media Training, News, Politics on January 11, 2012

There is a great deal of nonsense surround the fairness of quoting Mitt Romney saying “I like to be able to fire people.” Romney defenders scream that this quote is taken out of context and is horrifically unfair. But every quote in every newspaper, TV newscast and political ad is “taken out of context.” It is taken out of the context of a longer speech, interview or conversation.
The issue is whether it is taken out of context in a way that fundamentally distorts the meaning. If, for example, I said “children, you should never walk across busy streets without looking both ways.” And Newsmax quotes me as saying “TJ Walker says that children should ‘walk across busy streets without looking both ways,’” every fair-minded person would conclude that I had been taken out of context in such a way as to fundamentally distort and pervert my true meaning 100%.

How Do You Media Train Police Officers? -Media Training
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Media Training on August 8, 2011

Question:
I have a possibility of doing some training with police here in New Zealand. How would you train police officers on the beat to deal with pushy journalist who arrive at the scene of a crime they are dealing with? They may want basic information, or more detail. These may be low ranking police.
I know the relationship between police and media is not great here.
Rewrite Questions To Suit You -Media Training

After you have heard a reporter’s question, hold it up to the light and rewrite the question in your own head to make it easier for you to answer it. Note: this is not the same thing as ignoring the question and saying whatever you feel like. The art in this process is finding a way to rewrite the question so it is less threatening to you, while at the same time not appearing to be dodging the question entirely. Donald Trump couldn’t be any more full of BS if he swallowed every pasture in Texas. Trump had his fun. made a fool out of the national media, and now he’s gone home to do what he does best, play the fool on a realty show.Trump proves part of the old adage “you can fool all of the people some of the time.” He did fool a lot of people into thinking he might run for President. The reality is he could never survive media scrutiny into his finances and personal affairs.
Can anyone imagine Trump actually doing the hard work of slogging door to door in Iowa and sleeping in the homes of real American voters–in houses that didn’t have servants quarters to house his staff of hairdressers?
FORBES.com: Is Jason Calacanis The Best Talk Show Host on TV Today? -Media Training
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, CEOs/Financial, Media Training, Presentation Skills Training on May 10, 2011

At first blush, this is an absurd question. Calacanis and his show “This Week in Startups” aren’t even on “real” TV—it’s only seen on the internet. Second, Calacanis fidgets nervously with his pen in a distracting manner that is usually displayed by pimply-faced college freshmen appearing on camera for the first time.

Media Training Tip of the Day: Focus on three key messages. No more. If you try to communicate more than three points, people will remember nothing. If you have more than three points, then write an article or book, but leave the extra points out of your verbal presentation.
