Is Gain Really Gooder?
Posted by TJ Walker in advertising, internet marketing on February 16, 2011
I’m not sure if I agree with the use of bad English in a national commercial. But it had our office talking about the spot – and isn’t that the point of advertising!
You can also apply this to your next presentation. I don’t recommend using the word “gooder”, but I do advocate trying something that will grab the attention of your audience.
Census estimates show big gains for US minorities
Posted by TJ Walker in advertising, Analysis, Communications, Foreign Languages, Government & Politics, internet marketing, Politics, reputation management, Workplace on February 4, 2011

It will be interesting to see if the census news that racial and ethnic minorities accounted for roughly 85 percent of the nation’s population growth will translate into a new demographic of elected officials and an increase of advertising directed at this growing group.
More attention and concessions will be made to groups who can show buying and voting power. The political and media landscape could see a sweeping change over the next ten years.

Gawker Had Half a Billion Page Views in 2010
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, blogging, celebrities, internet marketing, Social Media on January 5, 2011

Hats off to Gawker for its successes and its willingness to be transparent. It had 81 million unique visitors, 215 million visits and more than 500 million page views.
This is truly astounding that a media organization could spring from nothing just a few years ago and garner such a huge audience—and without the help of some monopoly distribution like a traditional TV network.

An interesting story on Nightline, but is this a little like inviting a cannibal to dinner and then realizng that you are the dinner? You can watch the segment midway through the video clip here at ABC.
Craigslist shuts down its “Adult Services” Section on sites Worldwide
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, internet marketing, Media, public relations, reputation management on December 19, 2010
Craigslist has learned an old but important lesson the hard way: you will be judged by the company you keep. Craigslist has taken a lot of heat in the US for its sections that advertise for prostitution and other unsavory acts. Now, the worldwide pressure has mounted and Craigslist is throwing in the towel (or off the towel?) on this whole sleaze business.
Craigslist is a great business, but let’s not kid ourselves when it comes to their ethics. Just because something is legal (or in this case the legal liability can be plausibly denied) doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do.
New Study: Americans Use Internet as Much as TV
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, CEOs/Financial, internet marketing on December 14, 2010

It’s now a tie: 13 hours a week watching TV, 13 hours a week on the internet. According to Forrester, the amount of time people spend on the web has doubled in the last five years; the TV time has stayed flat. What the study doesn’t show is what young people watch. When I meet young people under 23 here in New York City, even the ones who work for TV news networks, most of them don’t own TV. They only watch video on the Internet.
Dubious PR gimmick of the Day: A NYC Greeting Card Store owner pole dances in store for customers
Posted by TJ Walker in internet marketing, News, public relations on December 9, 2010
A greeting card designer and store owner named Jill-Anne has a new store on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Her gimmick is that she’s installed a stripper poll in the middle of her store and she prances around in, wearing 6-inch heels, periodically through the day, especially if a customer buys $50 worth of cards.
Look, I’m all in favor of fusion. Martha Steward fused together home decorating, cooking and entertaining. But with Jill-Anne, the customer is left confused and wondering “what is it she’s really selling?” More at CBS.

If you aren’t blogging, why not?
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, blogging, internet marketing, Pitching, Presentation Skills Training on November 30, 2010
Martin Zwilling knows all about why entrepreneurs don’t have the time or energy to blog, given all the other demands on them. But he enumerates 7 very specific benefits to blogging. I think we are closely getting to the point where a blog is seen as a business card, you don’t necessarily get credit for having one, but you look strange, odd and are penalized if you don’t have one. More at Business Insider.

The War on Christmas is heating up…and this time, there are two sides
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Body Language, Crisis Communications, internet marketing, Professional Speakers on November 29, 2010
Atheists have finally gotten tired of being accused of waging a war on Christmas and this year have decided they might as well do so if they are going to be accused of it regardless. The image below is of a billboard leading into New York City. The Atheists group that posted the ad is using the classic PR strategy of using a controversial ad to serve as a news hook in order to get millions of dollars worth of publicity. And it worked. The billboard got major play in the New York Times.
Kim Kardashian getting trashed for being spokesperson for new pre-paid debit card
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, internet marketing, Media, media relations, Public Speaking Skills, reputation management, Sales and Marketing on November 21, 2010
Part of being a successful corporate spokesperson in the long run is constantly worrying about your own brand in the short run and occasionally saying no to the easy money.
Apparently, no one ever taught that lesson to Kim Kardashian. She’s the new spokesperson for a Mastercard pre-paid debit card that is, by all objective accounts, a horrible financial rip-off for the teens it is targeted to.
Palin Gets judge to order Gawker to remove pages of Palin’s new book from site
Posted by TJ Walker in Authors Corner, Communications, internet marketing, Media, News on November 21, 2010
I
’ll admit, it’s hard to feel sorry for Sarah Palin claiming she was “economically harmed” by a member of the mainstream or lamestream media, but it simply is not “fair use” for Gawker to run whole pages from Palin’s new book.
It’s fine to run quotes or even a few paragraphs, but not pages—that’s what “fair use’ law is all about. Something tells me Gawker would be too happy if I copied whole pages of their articles and used them as my own at www.tjwalker.com. If Gawker wants to run whole sections of pages, then it needs to buy serial rights form the book publisher. The irony, of course, is that the publicity from this dustup is going to result in even more book sales for Palin, making her even richer, thanks to publicity from Gawker. But Gawker benefits too because of all the publicity and new-found traffic it is receiving. Everybody wins.

The 6 Hottest Journalistic Startups for 2010 – Business Insider

Here’s an interesting look at 6 well-funded journalistic start-ups. I’m not sure that any of these will be around in three years. The most promising startups, I suspect, are done by individuals and don’t have any venture capital or large media parent companies. See for yourself at Business Insider.

Sarah Palin shows innovative use of Social Media Video
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, celebrities, Communications, Crisis Communications, internet marketing, Politics, Professional Speakers, reputation management, Social Media on November 4, 2010
Here’s a new video on Sarah Palin’s Facebook and YouTube pages. It a clever way for her to shape the zeitgeist and capture a mood, rather than do traditional talking head video focusing on message. Whether you love her or hate her, Palin is quickly emerging as a savvy media mogul in her own right.
