What was the most searched phrase online last year? How to tie a tie
Yahoo news came out with a report that the number one most searched phrase was “how to tie a tie?”. This presented an excellent opportunity to advance our position as communications experts by producing a video ourselves here at TJ Walker Interactive. It is a lesson that can easily be put into use by anyone reading this by following trending topics and major news events.
Posting a video online on YouTube or creating a blog post will increase your footprint on a topic and increase awareness for you.

Steve Martin did not leave the audience happy at the 92nd street Y after a speech. But nothing compares to an interesting character in Norway who flashed his…privates on live TV.
The big Internet Question: “How to tie a tie?”
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Crisis Communications, Humor on December 2, 2010

Yahoo came out with research this week claiming that the number one question on the internet is how to tie a tie. Interestingly, news topic searches came out ahead of celebrity gossip for the first time ever. “BP Oil spill” was huge. Predictably, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, etc were all on the top ten list. More at MSNBC
15% Of Incoming Members Of Congress Plan To Sleep In Offices?
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, blogging, Body Language, CEOs/Financial, Fear of Speaking, Government & Politics, Humor on November 30, 2010
On the one hand, incoming GOP members who plan on sleeping in their offices can earn a lot of good pr because this makes them look frugal and as though they are working 24/7.
But on the other hand, they run the risk of staffers walking in on them in the morning when the Reps are still in their bathrobe. Take it from me (I know from personal experience), workers do not particularly enjoy this moment.
Additionally, a lot of taxpayers who, on average make $50,000 per household, can’t figure out why a congressman can’t afford a simple apartment a few blocks from the Capital, given that members make $174,00 per year!

Martin Scorsese’s “Public Speaking” – a Review
Posted by TJ Walker in Authors Corner, celebrities, Communications, Humor, Media, Public Speaking Skills, Social Speaking on November 28, 2010
I caught the new Scorsese documentary on Fran Lebowitz when it premiered last week on HBO. While I don’t think this will spawn the next “Sex in the City” franchise for HBO, I personally loved the film. If you have an interest in the life of the public intellectual, the role of the speaker on college campuses and a the history of commentary going back to the infamous Gore Vidal/William F. Buckley (Queer) debate, then you will find this film as fascinating as I did. More at HBO.
Sound bite of the day “”We had the greatest generation — I think this is the greediest generation,” Alan Simpson
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Government & Politics, Humor, Politics on November 26, 2010
Alan Simpson is the rare politician who isn’t afraid to use a tart tongue. Of course he’s 79 years old and isn’t running for anything. Sadly, politicians of both parties are too afraid to ever stand up to seniors who are bankrupting the country. It’s a classic sound bite containing humor, attacks, and pithiness. If a younger elected official had made the same remark, it would have been viewed as a career-ending gaffe, even though it’s true. More at the Trib.
Fran Lebowitz in “Public Speaking” tonight on HBO at 10PM

If you are into speaking, media, punditry, and life of the public intellectual, then Martin Scorsese’s Public Speaking tonight is “must see” TV. I know I’ll be watching this.
Variety gave this review: “‘My Dinner With Andre,’ if Andre sat at a diner alone rambling about what annoys him.” That’s so biting and harsh and funny that it reminds me of something ran Lebowitz would say.
Sound bite of the day: “it was a first time anybody touched them in a long time and frankly, I liked it,” Gloria Allred.”

Sound bite of the day goes to Gloria Allred form her appearance on Sean Hannity, as follows:

Simpsons gives Fox a new tagline:”Not Racist But #1 With Racists”

How do you keep a TV show on the air and fresh after 23 years? Easy, you keep coming up with stuff that is so outrageous funny, people have to talk about it and pass it along. Unless you are Sarah Palin, Bill O’Reilly or Roger Ailes, this has to be the funniest cartoon you’ve seen all year, in part, because it is so true and so fair.

Argentinean legislator slaps the he@! out of fellow legislator

You’ve got to watch this. That’s one way to make your point in a debate! As much fun as it might be to see Nancy Pelosi do this to John Boehner next January, something tells me we won’t be seeing this on C-SPAN anytime soon.
Slate asks: “Is PBS trying to protect Sarah Palin?”
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Government & Politics, Humor, Media, News on November 16, 2010
That’s laughable. Of course, PBS is trying to protect PBS. The issue in question is the removing of negative comments Tina Fey made about Palin. PBS doesn’t want the new conservative congress to realize how much everyone at PBS hates Conservatives, because PBS doesn’t want to lose government money. And that’s why you didn’t see the funniest bits from Tina Fey.

Conan Blip flies over the Tonight Show
Posted by TJ Walker in blogging, celebrities, Humor, Media, media relations, News, reputation management on November 16, 2010
The late night TV wars are heating up and it looks like the folks at TBS are getting creative. This seems like something Roger Ailes would do to psyche out the competition and generate news buzz. Well done Conan!
Want to understand Quantitative Easing? Just keep asking “What does that mean?”
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Humor, Media, Politics, Professional Speakers, Public Speaking Skills, Uncategorized on November 13, 2010
Please watch this video. It is hysterical and does a great job of explaining quantitative easing, though I don’t agree with its take on inflation. Any speech you ever give in the future can be improved if you follow the one dictate in this video: keep questioning everything you say from the standpoint of the audience member saying “what does that mean?”
How will Conan O’Brien do with his new show on TBS?
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Humor, Media on November 8, 2010
Will Conan be the Fox News Channel of comedy, meaning he can get higher ratings on cable than his competitors on traditional broadcast? Or will he be Martha Stewart, someone who seemed like a media powerhouse, but when she moved from Broadcast to Cable, saw her audience shrink from 2 million to a mere 200,000?
Sure, next to Leno and letterman, Conan is still young and hip, in relative terms. But as a baby boomer who is only a couple of years shy of 50 (ouch, me too!), is he going to be cutting edge enough to reach 18-34 year olds who are used to really raunchy YouTube videos?
You can teach an old dog new trick – Conan O’Brien becomes master of new media
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, celebrities, Communications, Humor, internet marketing, Media, Media Training, News, podcasting, Professional Speakers, public relations, Public Speaking Skills on November 2, 2010
As a big shot at NBC for years, Conan O’Brien never had to dirty his hands with this whole Internet thing. But now that he is been on his own and is about to launch his own show on TBS, he’s had time to learn the ways of new media. Conan and his team have actually become masters at using clever, interactive videos to engage and grown his audience and fan base. Watch here to see his hilarious Show Zero. It’s low budget, low-production but still funny and has lessons for all of us who make Internet video.
