Communications Tip of the Day: If you are a leader and you have the desire, ability and willingness to shut down your entire country’s access to the Internet, chances are that it’s later than you think and you won’t be in power much longer.

Michael Vick To Sit Down With Oprah Winfrey
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, blogging, Body Language, celebrities, Communications, Crisis Communications, tip of the day on February 15, 2011

by Mike Bako – The media spotlight has shown brightly on Vick this year and he has not had any hiccups along the way. Vick is now in the home stretch of his rehabilitation tour and he will be crossing the finish line with a sit-down on Oprah Winfrey’s couch.
Vick has said and done the right things every step of the way this year. Aside from an interview with 60 Minutes he has said most of these things to the sports media. I think that going on Oprah is a good final step to reach some of those casual fans or people who still only associate his name with dog fighting and going to jail.
MEDIA TRAINING TIP OF THE DAY: When getting ready for an in studio radio or TV interview, a producer will often ask you to count to ten for a microphone volume check. Instead say “hi, I’m (your name) and I listen/watch (name of program) every chance I get.” First, the whole staff will appreciate your enthusiasm. Second, they might use what you just said as a promo for years to come giving you a publicity windfall.

Presentation Tip of the Day: People are watching you before you utter your first word. So give some thought to what people will see. Will you be smiling or frowning, staring at notes or looking at them, standing erect or slumping over, being boring or popping out of an egg?

Public speaking moment of the day: LeBron James confronts his heckler in Detroit

by Mike Bako -At this point in his career Lebron James has heard it all from opposing fans. The boos, the cheers, the cursing and through it all he has continuously preformed at a high level. At times it almost seemed like he used it as fuel to reach even greater heights.
So why did he decide to verbally confront a fan in Detroit over heckling that he was receiving? It certainly was not the first time he had heard it from the Detroit crowd. What was different this time was that his small children were nearby and he did not want them hearing the curses coming out of the fans mouth.
Presentation Tip of the Day: You don’t have to make every single audience member love you or even a majority of the audience members love you. But if 95% are chanting that they want you to resign, be fired, or leave the country, chances are, it’s time to find a new line of work.

Presentation Training Tip of the Day: If you just practice in your head at your computer, what seems like a 20 minute PowerPoint presentation will actually turn into a 50 minute presentation in front of the audience.

Media Training Tip of the Day: If you were interviewed for two hours by a major news weekly or business publication, and your major competitor was quoted, and you were not, guess what, no one at the publication has a vendetta against you or an “in” with your competitor. You weren’t quoted because you didn’t give good quote and your competitor did.

Piers Morgan Conducts Worst Interview Ever

Last night I caught Piers Morgan on CNN. He was interviewing Michael Oher, the guy who was the central character in the Sandra Bullock movie, The Blind Side. I hate to be mean, but the interview was an embarrassment for all involved.
Oher said two “uhs” and three “ya knows” for every single other word that came out of his mouth. It was painful and horrific. Look, not everyone has to be great at everything.
Presentation Training Tip: If someone interrupts you before you finish, stop, and then continue where you were. Don’t let an interrupter disrupt your message.

Media Training Tip: If the subject matter is something you’d rather not talk about, you still need to call reporters back. Otherwise you can be made to look worse and will have no influence on the story.

Public Speaking Tip of the Day: You should give a speech without doing a video-recorded rehearsal and critique only if you are willing to dictate an important memo and send it to the world without spell-checking, editing or reviewing it. Both actions are equally as reckless.

Media Training Tip of the Day: Assume that you could be asked to do a TV interview on any given day. So always have TV-friendly clothes and makeup ready in your office and home—just in case.

Media Training Tip: “I don’t know, but I will find out and get back to you before deadline” is an infinitely better thing to say to a reporter than making up facts that doesn’t turn out to be true.

Presentation training tip: Your colleagues and competitors spent on average 12, 16, or even 20 years on daily instruction on how to write well in school, but most of them never received more than 15 minutes on how to speak well. This is an opportunity for you.

Public Speaking Tip of the Day: People do “data dumps” because it seems “safe.” But if your goal is actual communication, data-dumping is actually the most dangerous thing you can do.
