Sob story for Miami Heat and its coach
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, celebrities, CEOs/Financial, Communications, Crisis Communications on March 8, 2011

Erik Spoelstra the head coach of the Miami Heat has now backtracked on his post game comments after a last-second loss Sunday to the Chicago Bulls, saying there were no tears, just a few slumping heads and red eyes.
No amount of backtracking can take back the fact that after Sunday’s game he said that players were crying in the locker room. That is the quote and video that has appeared in countless stories in print on on TV. The media attention being paid to his backtracking will be far smaller then his initial comments.
NY Times Claims Fox is Thinking of Dumping Glenn Beck
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, Best Speaker of the Day, blogging, Body Language, celebrities, CEOs/Financial, Communications, Crisis Communications on March 7, 2011

Are Beck’s days numbered at Fox? True, his audience has shrunk by a million people in recent times but let’s not forget that his audience is still larger then all of his competitors COMBINED. The bigger problem for Beck is that advertisers are fleeing.
I think Beck is still several trips to the woodshed away from ever being removed from Fox. True, Beck is making tens of millions of dollars a year from his other media ventures unrelated to Fox (according to the NYTimes), so he doesn’t need Fox. Still, his fat multi-million dollar contract does buy a lot of gold, ammunition and bunker space for the Beck clan, so I predict he will pull it together and stay just this side of crazy land in order to keep his show on Fox.

Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Crisis Communications on March 6, 2011

It will be interesting to see if this restaurant turns into a ghost town now with the headline making death of their spokesperson.
Surely no one who ate at the Heart Attack Grill thought they were eating healthy food but now with death hitting them square in the face it might make some patrons think twice about visiting the establishment. If for nothing else for karma’s sake.

BYU basketball player kicked off team for premarital sex -Crisis Communication
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Crisis Communications on March 3, 2011

A basketball player at Brigham Young University was dismissed from the team Tuesday night for having premarital sex, an honor code violation at the Mormon university. Many people are up in arms about this and are scratching their heads in amazement that a university with a team ranked #3 in the nation would drop such an integral part of the team.
You might think it is ridiculous to believe that college students should not have sex during their time at the school, but what BYU is demonstrating by sticking to their values is great brand management. If they were selective and preferential to athletes then their “code” of conduct would not carry any weight with their own students or to the outside world.
John Galliano to Face Trial in France for Anti-Semitic and Racist Speech—Could be imprisoned for 6 months
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, celebrities, CEOs/Financial, Crisis Communications, Foreign Languages, Government & Politics on March 3, 2011

Wow, no wonder so many racists and anti-Semites move to America—our First Amendment speaking privileges make it a lot less punishing on them.
Galliano has apologized this week. He will have top flight legal counsel. I doubt he’ll serve hard time. Still, if I were a prosecutor, what better way would there be for me to make a name for myself in France and the rest of the world than to force Galliano to remove his capture close and put on prison garb?

Rep. Darrell Issa Fires His Own Press Secretary
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics on March 2, 2011

I have been a congressional press secretary before and I am going to have to side with Rep. Issa on this one. If you don’t want your own employee to leak confidential info to reporters then they shouldn’t do so. Period. Leaking is a firing offense.
Let’s hope this isn’t the peak of Issa’s investigative mojo for the next 2 years.
