Can Rupert Survive?
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, CEOs/Financial, Crisis Communications on July 18, 2011
No! There have been too many cuts and he is bleeding to death. That’s not just metaphorical; one of his employees was just found dead.
Rupert basically has two choices in the coming weeks:
Does Murdoch’s Apology Measure Up?
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Body Language, CEOs/Financial, Crisis Communications on July 18, 2011
This apology would have been a great first step in Murdoch’s crisis communication strategy. Instead, it comes 12 days after the scandal broke and when most people had already made up their minds on whether there was wrongdoing or not.
Murdoch’s legacy will forever be painted with the brush of this scandal. The printed apology he commissioned was heartfelt and sincere but it came almost two weeks into the scandal. The resonance and meaning of the apology would have been greater if this was an immediate reaction and not one done out of being backed into a corner.
News Corp Under Increasing Attack
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, CEOs/Financial, Crisis Communications on July 13, 2011

In business, reputation matters. It doesn’t matter if you are a large cap, small cap or privately owned. And that’s why the investors of Rupert Murdoch’s Newscorp should be very scared now. They’ve lost $7 billion in market cap in the last week and that may be just the tip of the iceberg.
Earlier this week, the New York Times Paul Krugman wrote that Newscorp should be viewed as more of a criminal organization than a business. Yesterday, Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame wrote that Newscorp is like a mafia organization.

Urgent crisis communication message to Network Solutions CEO Tim Kelly
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, CEOs/Financial, Crisis Communications, Video on June 22, 2011
With two of our main sites down because of technical issues on the end of our server host Network Solutions we decided to take to the social media airwaves to fight back.
The next time you unfortunately find yourself in a similar situation do not just passively sit back and wait for things to resolve themselves. You have a voice and way to get your message heard. It is only a few mouse clicks away.
Why is Network Solutions lying? Network Solutions battered by DDoS attack and now batters its own clients with lies

The fastest way to upset your client base if you are an internet hosting service is to have your system hacked and have all your sites go down.
The second fastest way to upset your client base is to go on social media channels two days later declaring that the problem is solved and everything is back to business as usual but still have clients who have their sites down.

FORBES.com: Is Jason Calacanis The Best Talk Show Host on TV Today? -Media Training
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, CEOs/Financial, Media Training, Presentation Skills Training on May 10, 2011

At first blush, this is an absurd question. Calacanis and his show “This Week in Startups” aren’t even on “real” TV—it’s only seen on the internet. Second, Calacanis fidgets nervously with his pen in a distracting manner that is usually displayed by pimply-faced college freshmen appearing on camera for the first time.
Investor Pitching Tip of the Day from Jason Calacanis
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, CEOs/Financial, Communications, Pitching, Public Speaking Skills, Video on May 3, 2011
I was watching a special edition of This Week in Startups with Jason Calacanis where he was giving a speech on entrepreneurialism to a bunch of students. Here was the most interesting thing he says:
When I have pitched investors and asked them for money, I never raise money. When I ask them for advice, they always give me money.
Calacanis went on to suggest that the most effective way to get meetings and to raise money is to politely request to meet with an investor for coffee for 15 minutes at any place or time of the investor’s choosing. Then, get the investor to look at your website or product and then ask for advice. Don’t ask for money, ask for advice, and you will end up raising lots of money.
That’s advice that can literally be taken to the bank.
Shark Tank – Review
Posted by TJ Walker in CEOs/Financial, Communications, Pitching on May 2, 2011
As someone who is fascinated with pitch presentations and in the business of coaching pitch presentations, I obviously can’t resist watching ABC’s “Shark Tank.” The producers take what many would consider to be boring business meetings and spice them up to make them exciting and entertaining.
My big quibble with the show (and I’m not alone with this): The producers select almost exclusively entrepreneurs who make products or services that make products, I.e. cabinet making. A baby vomit bib (an actual product pitched on the show last week) may or may not be a good product, but it’s not what I think of as a true entrepreneurial endeavor. It’s hard to imagine this business ever becoming a big stand-alone business.
