What’s the easiest way to distract your audience? Wear something like this!

by Mike Bako
What is the quickest and easiest way to have an audience not remember a word of what you say during a media interview? Wear something so loud and outrageous that they spend all their time looking at what you are wearing and no time actually listening to what you are saying.
If you are a fashion designer or famous actor it might fit your image to be a little outrageous with your wardrobe choices. On Tuesday this Bloomberg guest wore a cow print blazer for his spot analyzing hedge funds and I doubt anyone can remember a single fund or point he made, no matter how good they may have been.

NY Times Claims Fox is Thinking of Dumping Glenn Beck
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, Best Speaker of the Day, blogging, Body Language, celebrities, CEOs/Financial, Communications, Crisis Communications on March 7, 2011

Are Beck’s days numbered at Fox? True, his audience has shrunk by a million people in recent times but let’s not forget that his audience is still larger then all of his competitors COMBINED. The bigger problem for Beck is that advertisers are fleeing.
I think Beck is still several trips to the woodshed away from ever being removed from Fox. True, Beck is making tens of millions of dollars a year from his other media ventures unrelated to Fox (according to the NYTimes), so he doesn’t need Fox. Still, his fat multi-million dollar contract does buy a lot of gold, ammunition and bunker space for the Beck clan, so I predict he will pull it together and stay just this side of crazy land in order to keep his show on Fox.
Sarah Palin Gets into Tit for Tat Feud with Kathy Griffin
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Best Speaker of the Day, blogging, Body Language, celebrities, CEOs/Financial, media relations on March 7, 2011
Is this reminiscent of the old Seinfeld episode where an annoying Kathy Griffin kind of comedian (played by Kathy Griffin) starts a feud with the more famous and more powerful Jerry Seinfeld. In the old sitcom, the feud becomes a staple of Griffin’s act and she spins everything the out-foxed Seinfeld says and does to her own favor.
Will history repeat itself? I’m betting so.

The New York Times does a comprehensive look at the wide range of CEO fashions these days.

Mediaite Adopts Video Question and Answer Format With Readers
Posted by TJ Walker in advertising, Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, Body Language on March 5, 2011

Mediaite, one of my favorite websites, will now allow readers to submit questions to writers and the writers will respond by talking directly to the reader in the form of a video.
We’ve been doing this at TJWalker.com forever and I think it’s inevitable that all major websites do the same. I’m looking forward to seeing how the team at Mediaite makes this a growing part of their relationship with readers. FYI, if you post a question for me here, I will respond with a video answer.

Jobs rallied for the occasion and personally unveiled the iPad himself. The new version has two video cameras and has shrunk the weight dramatically.
I’m glad I waited. The first version was too heavy to hold with one hand for a sustained period. Now I am ready to hop in; and with the multiple video cameras attached, I really have no choice.

FORBES.COM: Move Your Eyebrows -Media Training
Posted by TJ Walker in Analysis, Body Language, Communications, Media Training on February 28, 2011
When appearing on TV, it is important to do most of the same things you do in normal conversation. This includes moving your eyebrows and your forehead. Nervous people don’t move their eyebrows. Instead, their entire face is still and flat, with the possible exception of having a phony smile plastered on their faces. Read the rest of this article at Forbes.com
