Egypt, Weather Send News Ratings Soaring

Most people think that the traditional evening news broadcast is a dinosaur and in danger of being extinct. That might be the case, but when major news hits the big three networks are still where people turn to get their news and information.

Major news stories in Egypt and weather here in the US sent ratings for NBC, ABC and CBS soaring to high marks not reached in years.

Super Bowl ticket fiasco leads to free 2012 seats -Crisis Communication Lesson of the Day

by Mike Bako – The NFL should get a penalty flag thrown on them for the way they handled displaced ticket holders at this years Super Bowl.

The NFL knew last week there were problems with the installation of temporary Super Bowl seating sections and hoped until hours before kickoff they could be fixed. They were wrong.

AOL Buys Huffington Post for $315 Million

Congrats to Arianna Huffington for selling the Huffington Post for $315 million. That’s a huge windfall for her 5 year effort.

Huffington is a force of nature and is seemingly everywhere at all times and known by everyone prominent in every field. AOL is still a real and formidable company, but it is a little odd hearing its name as an acquirer.

Katie Couric Tweets that Mubarak Steps Down

Oops! That’s embarrassing for Couric and CBS News. While Twitter is quick and easy and informal, big name companies and brands still need to remember that every word they put out on Twitter represents their brand.

So if someone who is seen primarily as being in the news business puts out wrong “news,” it does damage to the brand.

Matt Drudge Joins Twitter, Begrudgingly

So Matt Drudge has finally joined Twitter and the folks at Gawker are mocking him for being in the Stone Ages. Nonsense! If you are as dominate in one medium as Matt Drudge is (#85 in the US according to Alexa), then you don’t have to participate in every other medium.

There is something to be said about focusing your energies on doing one thing well and not trying to be all things to all people. Drudge does a great job of doing two things: one aggregating top news stories of general interest to news junkies and two, finding links to any stories that make liberals looks like fools, imbeciles and jerks.

Kenneth Cole Egypt tweets ignite firestorm

by Mike Bako – In the past Kenneth Cole has wisely used the advertisements for his clothes and shoes to promote social issues. He was widely commended for bringing attention to such issues as Aids and homelessness when not a whole lot of people paid it any mind. He set his company apart from his competitors and gained a great reputation in the process.

His latest tweets about the violence in Egypt being tied to the release of his Spring fashion line seem so out of character and shallow that, at least temporarily, it will hurt the image he has spent so much time building.

Abrams Media Network Passes 9 Million Unique Visitors in One Month

This is why executives at Time Warner and your local CBS station stay awake late at night and think about retiring to Idaho to become a potato farmer. Abrams Media, through its sites like Mediaite.com (my favorite) is putting together large broadcast-sized audiences for less than what old media companies spend on decorating their lobbies.

This is why I don’t worry about Comcast merging with NBC and other such nonsense. While big media companies are playing financial games and reshuffling chairs on the Titanic, new upstarts like Abrams Media are stealing all their viewers, readers and visitors.

Chick-fil-A Facing Boycotts

Chick-fil-A is facing boycotts because of its financing of extreme, right-wing ‘Christian” groups like Focus on the Family. I grew up in the south and had a fondness for their sandwiches, but they are one of the more politicized companies around.

The owner’s seem intent on cramming their own version of fundamentalist Christianity down the throats of their employees and customers alike. That worked in a bygone era.

The Real Mark Zuckerberg Confronts A ‘Surprised’ Jesse Eisenberg On SNL

Was this a smart move for the CEO of a company valued at more than $50 billion to go onto a comedy show that makes fun of him? Is there a danger that Zuckerberg could look pathetic or at least lacking in gravitas?

I think the positives far out-weigh the negatives for Zuckerberg to appear on a show like SNL. After all, Facebook is about being cool and hip.

Piers Morgan Ratings Dropping Fast

Piers Morgan’s new show on CNN seems to be dropping every day. It’s now in 3rd place and has only 164,000 viewers in the 25-54 demo.

I’m beginning to think that it’s just not going to work having a celebrity guest-focused interview program on in prime time, no matter how good the interviewer is.

Media Training Tip of the Day: Don’t be afraid to admit “I don’t know.”

Paul Krugman is widely respected by everyone who isn’t a radical right-wing zealot. A posting he put on his blog yesterday is a perfect example of why people like him and think he is an honest and straight shooter.

Here’s what he posted regarding Egypt:

O’Reilly Revisits Boehner’s Crying Issue: “He Has To Get His Emotions Under Control”

See! I’m not the only one. I was denounced for being an ideologue for criticizing Boehner’s crying on election night last November.

But Bill O’Reilly can’t be dismissed as a left-wing critic who is ideologically opposed to Boehner. O’Reilly and others all across the spectrum are now openly wondering if Boehner really has the gravitas to be the leading Republican spokesperson in the country.

P Diddy sued for $1 trillion and accused of causing 9/11 attacks

Some lazy journalists take the position that if someone sues somebody, it is now involving an arm of the government and is therefore “news.” Nonsense. This is an abdication of a journalist’s job to report on what is important or at least interesting. This P.Diddy story is just plain stupid.
