Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Shot Speaking at Public Event in AZ
This is not only a sad moment for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the nation, but it’s a sad moment for public speakers everywhere. Public speaking was already the number one fear must people have. Now, all local, city, county, state, and federal officials are going to have to literally fear for their life every time they speak in public.
This should do for public speaking events what 9/11 did to airport security. Prediction: public officials are going to speak in public much less often in the future, security will be tighter, and those without ID and social security numbers will be turned away.
As horrific as it is for a President to be shot and killed, it is assumed people want to kill the leader of our nation; and he is given secret security protection accordingly. But who is going to want to be a low-level member of congress when they receive no secret service protection and they are sitting ducks for any madman with a gun and a grievance?
I think we can expect a lot more virtual and internet-based town hall meetings in the future.
