Judge Strikes Down NYC’s Gruesome Tobacco Ads
Posted by TJ Walker in advertising, Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, Authors Corner, Best Speaker of the Day, blogging, Body Language, celebrities, CEOs/Financial on December 30, 2010

The point of these anti-smoking ads was to drive home the dangers of just how bad smoking is for you. The judge in this case ruled on the legal merits of state versus federal law but at the same time as making one decision he is depriving the state of a valuable anti-smoking public relations tool. Nothing sticks in someones mind as well as an image does.

Skype is trying to stay ahead of the curve and provide a valuable service for their loyal customers with this new iPhone app. Most people, the offices of TJ Walker Interactive included, use Skype on their computers and laptops. With more people being mobile and using their mobile phones as portable offices this is a great service to provide people.
Rahm Emmanuel’s Opponent Flushes Toilet During Radio Interview

Dear Congressman Danny Davis,
Please use the mute button on your phone the next time you are conducting an interview and find yourself in the bathroom.
Davis was conducting an interview on a Chicago radio station when a toilet flushing sound could be heard in the background. Whether it was Davis doing the flushing or not that is all people will remember from the interview. Any distraction away from your message points is one distraction too many.
Piers Morgan Likes to Fight on Twitter
Posted by TJ Walker in advertising, Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, Authors Corner, Best Speaker of the Day, blogging, Body Language, celebrities, CEOs/Financial on December 30, 2010
Take a look at an exchange between Piers Morgan and a local NYC news anchor. Piers really goes at it. On the one hand, I commend Piers for being interactive, responsive and engaging. On the other hand, doesn’t he have something better to do? Should he be reading some briefing books on America? Or attending parties at the Playboy Mansion? I worry about social media burnout for myself and others when ever single post has to be responded to ad nauseam.
What Will Be the Top Five Media Launches of 2010?

Yahoo’s Cutline makes some predictions: There number one choice is Rupert Murdoch’s “The Daily.” I’m skeptical. Rupert knows newspapers and he’s smart enough to hire Roger Ailes to run his TV news. But I’ve yet to hear a compelling reason why someone needs to go to “The Daily” online rather than just using a free RSS Reader. Check out Cutline’s list for yourself.

Even the Eloquent British Stumble and Stammer
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Humor, Media, News on December 30, 2010
We Americans often put the British on a pedestal when it comes to their speaking skills (think George W. Bush and Jimmy Carter versus Tony Blair and Winston Churchill). That’s why it’s refreshing to see this clip of all the major blunders made by BBC anchors during the last year. Enjoy the show.

YouTube Stars Make Six Figure Incomes
Posted by TJ Walker in advertising, celebrities, Communications, Media, podcasting, Social Media on December 29, 2010
Business Insider compiled a list of all the YouTube stars who make more money than EMS officials. It is a fascinating new media world we live in. Be careful when you see how many views some of these stars get for their videos–it will depress you. The leader had more than 600 million views. Try to keep in mind that the average Youtube video only receives 3 views.

Smile Your Way to Speech Success
Posted by TJ Walker in Body Language, Fear of Speaking, Public Speaking Skills on December 29, 2010
You are about to give a big speech and you are understandably tensed up. You are thinking and thinking and memorizing, and focusing, focusing, focusing. If you were any tenser you’d break in two.
You know this and you feel this, but don’t show your audience. Remember, your audience can’t read your mind or see inside your knotted stomach. They will never know about your sorry psychological state if you wear a mask. You don’t have to buy a rubber Halloween mask or take a trip to Africa for a wood carved one.
Sam Seder Does Clever “Weather Report” on Global Warming on MSNBC
Posted by TJ Walker in advertising, Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, Authors Corner, Best Speaker of the Day on December 29, 2010
Sam Seder reminds me of early Rush Limbaugh. Really. They are at the opposite ends of the political spectrum but they both realize that the most direct way to get an audience to pay attention to you and adapt your views is to talk about the subject in an indirect manner, by using humor, analogy, and fun.
Take a look here at how Seder explains why people don’t believe in global warming.
Pundit Pat Buchanan In Hot Water for Using Stats From Racist Website
Posted by TJ Walker in advertising, Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, Authors Corner, Best Speaker of the Day, blogging, Body Language, celebrities, CEOs/Financial on December 29, 2010

I’m all for using eclectic sources as a way of making blogs and commentary more interesting. But Pat Buchanan has to be a little more careful when it comes to his sources. Gawker does a nice “gotcha” on Buchanan for using stats on immigration from an obviously racist website.
Buchanan has skated so close to the racist/anti-Semite/nationalist/tribalist line that he practically lives there. I don’t think this destroys Buchanan’s career, but at this stage, it might only take one more racial straw and producers on all major news networks will decide no more air time for Pat.
NBC News with Brian Williams Wins 2010 Ratings War

Congratulations to NBC. Question: Who still watches the network evening broadcasts? I only see clips of interesting stories the next day online. Otherwise, every single story I see on a network newscast is something I’ve already learned about 6 to 8 hours earlier on the Internet.
Or it is a frivolous story that I don’t care about.
Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie to Take on Birthers

Abercrombie wants to release even more documents proving Obama was born in Hawaii, since the birth certificates and numerous newspaper announcements at the time haven’t persuaded more than 40% of the American people.
Abercrombie seems like a smart and ambitions fellow. Perhaps next he can persuade people that the moon landing wasn’t a hoax, that there was a holocaust, and that the moon is not, I fact, made of green cheese.
Crisis communications emergency for Jet Blue
Posted by TJ Walker in advertising, Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, Authors Corner, Best Speaker of the Day, blogging, Body Language, celebrities, CEOs/Financial, Communications, Crisis Communications on December 29, 2010

One of the most influential bloggers in the world, Seth Godin, rips apart Jet Blue and their website today. I would not want to be an executive at Jet Blue today; you are either doing a lot of yelling or being yelled at a lot. Godin goes step by step revealing every single flaw in the typical Jet Blue customer’s experience on the Jet Blue website.
It is painful. And it’s clear that no one at jet blue has ever used their own website. Let’s see how long it takes Jet Blue to correct their mistakes. I’m betting they do it quickly.
