Momentum Is Gaining In the Senate for Filibuster Reform

The Democrats in the Senate are advancing their plans to change filibuster rules in the new Congress. Regardless of your politics, this is GREAT news if you are a lover of speeches.

If the filibuster rules go back to their old style, that will mean Senators will have to speak for hour after hour if they want to prevent a vote from happening on a bill. Sure, some speeches will be boring (Sen. Strom Thurmond resorted to reading the phone book when he filibustered for 24 hours against desegregation in the 1950s). But some of the speeches Will be fascinating, especially when a Senator is tired and has run out of prepared text–then we’ll really hear some fun stuff!
