Limbaugh calls President Obama a “jackass” Will he be punished? – lessons in media training

No, though some have tried to paint Limbaugh in the same corner as Rick Sanchez, the CNN anchor who was recently fired for making impolitic remarks about Jon Stewart and Jews.

Limbaugh is “safe” in calling the Obama a “jackass” because jackass has no discernable racial, ethnic, or religious overtones to it. Who among us can say we’ve never called President Obama, Bush, Clinton or Reagan a jackass?

Was Limbaugh rude, obnoxious, non-factual and demagogic? Absolutely! But last time I checked, those weren’t reasons that would lead to him being fired—in fact, they are the very reasons he is successful.

Unfortunately Limbaugh will be rewarded by his many devotees. This kind of disrespect for our nation’s leaders is money in the bank for those who seek the lowest levels of criticism. There is nothing factual in “Jackass.” It is easier to tear down a person than to do the hard work of contending about ideas.

Mitch, I agree with you on all counts. Unfortunately I think that means you and I will both be called “jackasses.”
