Obama Mocked for Using Teleprompter at Elementary School
Posted by TJ Walker in Government & Politics, Keynote Speaking, Media Training, Politics, Uncategorized on January 25, 2010
Once again President Obama is being mocked for using a teleprompter–this time at an elementary school. My advice, the President should ignore his critics and keep using the Teleprompter–it works for him and keeps him on message. Democrats used to attack President Reagan for using cue cards, even in meetings. Reagan, wisely ignored his critics too.

Senator Arlen Specter Tells Rep/ Bachman “Act like a lady!”

US Senator Arlen Specter got into a talk radio fight with Rep Michele Bachmann this week. Apparently both were talking over each other. Finally, Specter said, “I’ll treat you like a lady, now act like one.” Ouch! That’s one way to make the sound bite of the day. Specter grabs attention because his comment was so emotional, attacking, heated and to some, sexist. Both politicians are tough and are no slouches at talking over their opponents, so I don’t think anyone really feels sorry for Bachmann. Specter is all across the map ideologically, so you won’t have the usual hysteria that might occur if a prominent liberal were to make such a comment. Still, it was an interesting clash and a great way of capturing the current level of political frustration coming out of the capital these days.

John Edwards IS the Baby’s Father – public speaking media training presentation training
It Turns out, John Edwards IS the Baby’s Daddy

It may seem silly or embarrassing to say this now, but I was once an admirer of John Edwards’ ability to give a speech and communicate. Whatever good will he once had has now been so thoroughly destroyed I don’t know how he ever returns to public life–even in an appointed position. For years Edwards denied having an affair. When caught, he finally admitted it was true. Then for years he denied having a child with his girlfriend. Now that the person who was is alibi is about to reveal that Edwards is, in fact, th father, Edwards now admits that he was lying all along and that it is his child. The problem now is that anyone can accuse Edwards of anything, say shooting JFK, and it fits into a paradigm where he denies it and then we anticipate him being found guilty months or years later. At some point you become some a comical character than nothing you say or do can stop people form laughing at you. Then, all potential for effectiveness is lost. I hate to pile on with the cheap shots, but I’m afraid John Edwards biggest opportunity in the future may be as a TV spokesman for a men’s hair color product.
Sen.-Elect Scott Brown for President???

The headline on the Drudge Report is about the new Mass. Senator running for President. Premature? Of course, but the euphoria is natural for two reasons. #1, it was a real political coup for any Republican to take control of Ted Kennedy’s Senate Seat. And #2 it is a testament to the communication skills of Brown.
Why is Sen.-elect Brown getting such good marks and why is he being compared favorably to Ronald Reagan?
Martha Coakley Loses Senate Race
Posted by TJ Walker in Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, Media Training, Politics, Uncategorized on January 19, 2010
Coakley was viewed as a horrible candidate by the media, Democratic operatives, and most important, the voters. But what made her a bad candidate? Her ability to speak to voters and to the media were often called into question. Coakley was seen as a wooden and stiff speaker. Worse, she couldn’t seem to find any effective media messages. And to top it all off, she either couldn’t or wouldn’t paint a negative portrait of her opponent.
Successful politicans on all sides of the political spectrum are good about explaining not only what is good about themselves, but what is bad about there opponents. Coakley never learned this, Scott Brown, the new Senator-elect from Mass, did.
