Gov. Christie’s New Year’s Message to Voters, Media and the Political Establishment: Drop Dead!
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, media relations, Politics, reputation management on December 31, 2010
NJ Governor Chris Christie returns from Disney and lashes out at the media, voters and the political establishment. He comes across as petulant and not understanding what leadership is al about. While I have often praised Christie for his strong communication skills, they did not serve him well during this time of crisis. This time, his tough talk just made him look petty and mean. More analysis in the video below.
Momentum Is Gaining In the Senate for Filibuster Reform
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Debate Central, Government & Politics, Presentation Skills Training, Professional Speakers on December 31, 2010
The Democrats in the Senate are advancing their plans to change filibuster rules in the new Congress. Regardless of your politics, this is GREAT news if you are a lover of speeches.
If the filibuster rules go back to their old style, that will mean Senators will have to speak for hour after hour if they want to prevent a vote from happening on a bill. Sure, some speeches will be boring (Sen. Strom Thurmond resorted to reading the phone book when he filibustered for 24 hours against desegregation in the 1950s). But some of the speeches Will be fascinating, especially when a Senator is tired and has run out of prepared text–then we’ll really hear some fun stuff!

NY Governor-Elect Andrew Cuomo Loves the Telephone
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Government & Politics, Media, Politics, reputation management on December 31, 2010
In the world of constant new media change, it’s important to realize that there is nothing wrong with using old media, as long as you do it effectively. There’s an interesting profile today of New York’s new governor Andrew Cuomo and his love affair with the telephone. apparently, he makes dozens and dozens of calls a day with some lasting 40, 45 minutes or longer. He doesn’t do email or other electronic media.
Is this good or bad? Well, he’s governor and you and I aren’t, so he’s doing something right, or at least right for him. Cuomo is an excellent speaker and apparently he is quite captivating on the phone.
Chris Brown Apologizes for Using Anti-Gay Slurs In Social Media
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Communications, Media, Media Training, public relations, reputation management on December 31, 2010
We are in the tail end of a zeitgeist change where using gay slurs has gone from acceptable and normal to unacceptable and taboo. Entertainers who use anti-gay slurs now face the wrath of Perez Hilton and many other outwardly Pro-Gay media outlets that didn’t exist, 20, 10 or even 5 years ago. We are now a matter of months, not years, from the point where using a gay slur will be seen as no different from using the “N” word, and with all the career ending baggage that entails.

Who are the Best-Dressed Newscasters in the World?
Posted by TJ Walker in celebrities, Communications, Media, reputation management on December 31, 2010
Styleite has come up with its best-dressed list. I agree with many of their choices, but there are two major flaws with the list. #1, they made Rachel Maddow #1 on the list. Is this a joke? Why not nominate Jane Lynch as the cheer leading coach from Glee while you’re at it? The other big ommission is not putting CNN’s Ali Velshi on the list. Ali has more sartorial pizzaz than all the other men on the list combined.
Media Training tip: the dressing goals of anchors are and should be different from politicians and other news-makers. If you are an anchor seen every day, it is more important to be visually interesting. If you are a news-maker, it is more important to have people focus on your message and not be distracted by what you are wearing.
Winklevoss Twins Want to Sue Facebook Again
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Media, reputation management, Social Media on December 31, 2010
$65 million isn’t enough! The Winklevoss Twins want to sue Facebook for even more money. They made a firm agreement to accept the $65 million a few years back and be on their way. But now they’ve changed their mind and want to cancel the agreement. Isn’t it a bit unseemly, even un-gentlemanly to break one’s word Misters Winklevoss? If this is all about honor, aren’t you behaving without honor?
These boys better how they never face a jury. Two incredibly rich, tall, good-looking guys who grew up in Greenwich and get to spend their time being medal-winning Olympic atheltes dont elicit much sympathy, even if they do have a good point or tow.
Is Global Warming Losing the PR Battle?
Posted by TJ Walker in Communications, Crisis Communications, Government & Politics, Media, Politics on December 31, 2010
The number of people who believe in global warming has dropped from 71% to 56% in the last couple of years. As the scientific community reaches consensus, the public becomes more divided.

Is the focus On Facebook Fans a Waste of Time?
Posted by TJ Walker in advertising, blogging, Communications, Media, reputation management on December 31, 2010
Many big companies are concluding it’s a waste of time to go after raw big numbers of Facebook fans. I agree. It’s better to engage 10,000 fans on a regular basis and have real conversations with them than it is to have a million fans who never come back a second time.
AdAge looks at how major companies are trying to build more meaningful fan pages here.
The Next Big Media Form After The Newspaper will Be…Nothing
Posted by TJ Walker in blogging, Communications, Media, News, publishing on December 31, 2010
Nothing in the sense of a distinct new format like an iPad ap. Instead, the focus is on content, audio video or text. People in the media business, myself included, have to focus on creating compelling content that people want, not on finding a new container.

George Clooney and Google launch satellite plan to avert Sudan violence
Posted by TJ Walker in advertising, Analysis, Audio/Video Technology, Authors Corner, Best Speaker of the Day, blogging, Body Language, celebrities, CEOs/Financial on December 30, 2010

You might not agree with George Clooney’s political view but you have to give the star credit for putting his mouth, wallet and time behind causes that he cares about. He is also one of the few Hollywood stars that knows how to use the press to his advantage rather than just complain about being hounded by the paparazzi.
Clooney knows how to use his star power to bring coverage to issues he is passionate about. His partnership with Google to help prevent future violence in the Sudan is a great example of this.
