The subtle art of correcting media mistakes

Recently, while traveling abroad, I was the subject of a very flattering profile in Forbes Magazine (the Croatian version). In the article, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was listed as one of my clients. This does not happen to be true. This is a mini-mini media problem for me that, left unchecked, could one day grow into a media crisis. The issue of resume inflation has brought down many a public figure, and I don’t want to be one of them. So I always try to correct the record when this happens. But this is an issue that has to be handled delicately. I don’t want to make a mountain out of a molehill. I don’t want to embarrass the reporter for making a tiny, innocent mistake, that, frankly, made me look good. Still, I don’t want this to work its way permanently into the public record. And I want to be able to show a paper trail if anyone ever tries to suggest that I have fabricated my credentials. So, in an effort to act ethically and honestly and to protect my future reputation, I sent the following email to the publicist who is my liaison with the journalist at Forbes.

TV Legend John Madden Retires Today

Madden shows the key to TV success is NOT necessarily being thin and good-looking. Madden came on the scene when most sportscasters were still dull, straight-forward and lacking in passion.

Madden’s keys to success?  He is passionate, emotional, energetic, and knowledgeable and is not afraid to use visuals in a compelling manner to make insightful points. He’s exactly what you’d want if you invited friends over to watch a game in your own living room. He will be missed in living rooms and bars across the globe.

Review of Teleprompterpresident.com

I just stumbled across a website, www.teleprompterpresident.com, which chronicles every single mistake Obama makes on camera (pus it fabricates a few in a funny and mean-spirited way). Even though I suspect that the organizers of the site are avid opponents of Obama, I think they are doing a great service for him. Obama is on notice that every blunder will be magnified and re-played again and again. This would keep anyone on his or her rhetorical toes. And it is a great motivator for practice and speech rehearsal. My only regret about this website is that it can’t be duplicated for every public official in the world, every corporate leader and, indeed, anyone who ever has to speak to more than 3 people in a room.

For the record regarding obama

I have just returned from 3 week training, speaking, media tour of Europe. While in the process of promoting my new DVD “TJ Walker’s Secret to Speaking like Obama” a newspaper erroneously wrote that I am Obama’s presentation coach. For the record, I am not. In fact, I have gone out of my way to tell the media and everyone else that I am not Obama’s coach. I even went so far as to plug Mike Sheehan (Obama’s coach) in a recent CNN piece with Jeannie Moos. I have also alerted the PR consultants who coordinated the interview in Serbia to alert the journalist regarding the correction (I do not speak or write Serbian).

This is another nice use of a blog, to create permanent record documenting things such as this. I hope there is never a question of anyone thinking that I have unfairly claimed credit for anything I haven’t done or any client that isn’t mine. Now, at least, there is a clear and permanent record.
